House Democrats appear ready to back Senate DHS funding deal

House Democrats appear ready to back a bipartisan Senate deal to reopen the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Border Patrol — with some even saying they’re open to crossing the aisle to help Republicans hop the procedure hurdle that’s threatening to stall the process.

That legislation passed unanimously in the upper chamber in the early hours of Friday morning, sending it to the House, where it could be considered later in the day.

While Democrats are still crunching the details of the Senate bill, some said it looks very much like the proposal sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) to fund most of DHS — including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), whose workers have gone without pay for almost six weeks through the shutdown — but not ICE or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Democrats have sought to force a vote on that bill via a discharge petition, but have lacked the GOP support to make it successful. “ (I)t sounds very similar to the discharge petition almost all of us as Democrats have already signed,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) said Friday morning, referring to the Senate bill. He cautioned that Democrats will still need to meet as a group ahead of any votes, but predicted that GOP leaders face the tougher lift in terms of convincing members of their party to back the agreement.
