Homan insists ICE has a 'well thought out plan' to deploy at airports as TSA lines enrage Americans

Trump administration officials tried to explain how a surge of ICE agents to the nations airports, due to begin Monday, would alleviate some of the travel pressures Americans have faced in the midst of a Department of Homeland Security shutdown that is now in its second month.
Border Czar Tom Homan said Sunday that ICE agents would assist in airport security while also enforcing the presidents immigration agenda. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, meanwhile, claimed ICE agents were already trained to perform tasks at airports such as patting down individuals and operating X-ray scanning technology.
The president revealed his plans to deploy ICE agents to airports on Saturday. Despite passengers being hampered by long lines caused by the ongoing TSA shortages, Trump suggested the agents would instead be used to guarantee security like no one has ever seen before. The agents, he said, would also carry out the immediate arrest of all Illegal Immigrants who have come into our Country, with heavy emphasis on those from Somalia.
When questioned about whether there was coherent plan to help ICE agents fulfil their new duties, Homan seemed to suggest that their job would be more aligned with Trumps immigration objective, rather than dealing with the problems that have arisen for travelers.

(5,068 posts)That assuming no one else is overstaying visas and such which I am sure they are not even counting. They seem to know the target and yet they can't seem to really get the job done. I am sure their caring attitude and excellent interpersonal skills will make things go more smoothly at the airports. Should also speed up the quitting of existing TSA agents. I do pity the TSA agents getting caught up in this mess not of their making.

(2,301 posts)is at the gates of arriving planes........and everyone other than white, English speaking individuals, with U.S. Passports, will be separated and harassed.....
BP and ICE won't even need detention centers,.......there will be transport planes, waiting at every airport standing by, ready to transport them to who knows where.....

(3,252 posts)with this administrations track record, my bet will be on Catastrophic fuckups for $2000, Alex. ICE agents will be much more interested in adding to their arrest totals than reducing the long lines of travelers.
Sure glad Im not traveling by air anytime soon.
Just wondering how many facets of modern society they can trash. Are there any theyve missed?

President Donald Trump and top administration officials said Sunday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will arrive at the nations airports on Monday to handle security at exceedingly long lines driven by a shortage of TSA workers.
I look forward to moving ICE in on Monday, and have already told them to, GET READY. NO MORE WAITING, NO MORE GAMES! Trump said on Truth Social.
On the surface, its likely that many air travelers would welcome the presidents no more waiting message, but as the policy advances, a handful of questions hang overhead......
2. What will ICE agents do at airports? This is arguably the most obvious of the questions, but theres ongoing uncertainty about the answer. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trumps online announcement came as a surprise to officials inside ICE and at DHS, who spent the weekend trying to figure out how it could work.
On CNNs State of the Union, White House border czar Tom Homan, who will lead the effort, conceded that the plan was hatched by Trump a day earlier and was a work in progress a problem that became more acute when Homan said ICE agents would not be involved with security screening operations, right around the time Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy appeared on ABC News and said the exact opposite.....
5. Is this all about petty, partisan spite? On Monday morning, Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, endorsed the administrations policy, telling Fox Business, Itll drive the Democrats crazy.
Comer on airports: "I'm glad the president has put ICE in there for a multitude of reasons. It'll drive the Democrats crazy."

With this on-air comment, the congressman said the quiet part loud. This isnt about solving a problem, this is about playing political games. Or, as MS NOW contributor Philip Bump summarized, [T]he ICE-at-airports thing is no more complicated than Trump knowing that his opponents hate ICE and thinking that they will therefore be tearing out their hair at this devious gambit.
My advice for air travelers: Keep showing up extra early at the airport, because theres no reason to assume that ICE agents presence will make a positive difference.
