Trump's face on a gold coin? His hand-picked panel will decide.
Source: Washington Post
A federal arts commission will weigh whether to approve a commemorative gold coin featuring Donald Trump on Thursday, the administrations latest effort to celebrate the president, even as Democrats and members of another federal committee say the idea is deeply inappropriate and potentially illegal.
The proposal calls for a 24-karat gold coin depicting Trump leaning on a desk with clenched fists, based on a photograph taken by his chief White House photographer and now displayed in the Smithsonians National Portrait Gallery. Such gold coins from the U.S. Mint typically sell for several thousand dollars.
The Commission of Fine Arts composed entirely of Trump appointees, including a 26-year-old executive assistant whose only listed credential for the post was managing Trumps portrait has so far signaled support for the administrations projects, including unanimously approving Trumps White House ballroom last month.
But new coin designs are supposed to receive approval from two panels and that second panel, the bipartisan Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, refused last month to consider the proposed gold coin. In interviews, members opposed putting a sitting president on currency, saying it would break with democratic norms and reek of subservience to royalty.

(13,287 posts)If they mint it and I ever get offered one in change, I will refuse to touch it.
At least it won't be as in-your-face as those big brother-esque banners are for the poor residents of D.C.
But just knowing of it's existence would be an awful feeling.

(14,848 posts)If they make it a 1 oz coin, im sure they will sell well at $4000.
Id buy some. Although I figure they would likely be offered to China and Russia at those prices with no chance for US citizens to profit. And then announced as the mints best selling collectable coin evar. All the more so because gold is soft and easy to shape, so they would quickly become rare.

(653 posts)Supposedly his rational for eliminating the Penny was it would save taxpayers money because it cost too much to mint.
Every store I go to now is rounding up on the listed price because there is a "shortage" of pennies.
So now instead of taxpayer money dealing with it were ALL paying for his stupid f**king brain dead idea.
So far no store I've gone to is rounding down. That genius move is going to eventually cost consumers billions of dollars cents at a time.
