NEW YORK (AP) The average price for a gallon of gasoline jumped 11 cents overnight to about $3.11 in the U.S., according to motor club AAA.
Gas prices were already rising before the U.S. launched strikes on Iran as refiners switch over to summer blends of fuel, but crude futures have risen sharply this week because of the war. On Tuesday, oil futures soared to levels not seen in more than a year as Iran launched a series of retaliatory attacks, including a drone strike on the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia.
Iran has also struck energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of all oil traded passes, sending global oil and natural gas prices soaring.
Benchmark U.S. crude jumped 8.6% to $77.36 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, added 6.7% to $81.29 a barrel. Global oil prices jumped to start the week over concerns that the war will clog the global flow of crude.

(168,377 posts)since the markets are "global" (and you have agreed-upon exchanges that track/report these).

(5,663 posts)in PA I see between $2.79-$2.89, on par with what we have in NC. Some places in PA reporting as low as $2.61, which is lower than any place I have seen in my metro area, so the taxes can't be that bad.

(168,377 posts)Even when I look on Gas Buddy, most of what they claim is "in Philadelphia" is in reality in NJ or DE or miles away outside the city, and most are the "convenience store" stations. The Exxons/Mobils/Lukoils/Sunocos, etc., tend to be higher.
The 2026 PA fuel tax - https://www.pa.gov/agencies/revenue/resources/tax-rates/motor-fuel-tax-rates#accordion-416661d3e1-item-60079e4470
Aviation gasoline $0.057/gallon
Jet fuel $0.017/gallon
Liquid fuels (motor gasoline and gasohol) $0.576/gallon
Fuels (undyed diesel and undyed kerosene) $0.741/gallon
It's one of the highest in the country. We came in 4th last year (but early on when Tom Wolf was governor the first term ~2014 - 2018, it was the highest and not long after, other states started leapfrogging us).
All of the states ahead of us have minimum wages WAY more than PA's $7.25/hr (yes we are STILL stuck on that).
I think the state has a requirement where prices can only be changed once a week (not sure what day), so by next week, look out!

(168,377 posts)As a retired chemist who used to run HPLC and GC a lot, it has that sharp increase at the front of the peak and a LOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGG tail on the back end.

What I noticed happens around here is that when you have main thoroughfares with many gas stations along the route, they all pretty much price fix to around the same (high) price. You have to go to stations far away from those thoroughfares to find the cheaper prices.

I have always done that - I don't like the "jump in the car and go to one place, then come home, then back out and go to another place, then come home, then the next day go to another place, then come home", ad infinitum. I try to combine all the stops in one trip.

(50 posts)I recall that on 911 one of the local convenience store chains doubled the price of gas while the towers were falling. Did not buy gas from them for a long time. Had no choice when the other chain stores nearby both closed
