Homeland Security suspends TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is suspending the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs as a partial government shutdown continues.
The programs are designed to help speed registered travelers through security lines. Suspending them could cause headaches for fliers.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement that shutdowns have serious real world consequences. She also said that TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.
The partial government shutdown began Feb. 14 after Democrats and the White House were unable to reach a deal on legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats have been demanding changes to immigration operations that are core to President Donald Trumps deportation campaign.

(31,262 posts)my TSA precheck was due to expire in March. They actually texted me, but I don't do anything based off a text, so I went to the website to check it out. so it's all privatized and for about $60 or $70, doing it through CLEAR but not having to sign up for that program, I renewed.
I got an email telling me my application was being reviewed and was thinking, uh oh, they're going to have an AI bot scroll through my social media and take it away, but that didn't happen. Got this in my email today:
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reviewed your renewal submission to the TSA PreCheck® Application Program and determined that you are approved for the Program. Congratulations!
So I'm good for the next 5 years. Though it appears the TSA line will not be available for awhile right now, which sucks. I think that for the sake of at least forcing some humanitarian changes to ICE it's worth the sacrifice. I wouldn't even mind at all if the Democrats said that's not good enough, END DHS.
fuck kristi noem the puppy murderer rancid adulterer propaganda spitting c--t. She's got the money for a 70 million dollar honeymoon suite in the sky but can't help the people who pay that bill?

it's worth it imo. this cannot be what brings Democrats back to the table caving in to the republicans.
honestly when I consider what others are being put through by this administration, it's very small potatoes imo.

We all know the budget is not causing these cut backs. It's the plastic face of Kristi that's causing them. ICE Barbie needs another jet.

I don't think the "detentions" of U.S. citizens has been amped up to the level they are actually planning for yet. The early stages we are seeing are still easy for people to downplay.

(38,445 posts)during a period when the workers needed to staff the extra lines or provide escorts, are being required to work without pay is hardly implementing control.
It may have the effect of making those with means to pay for the courtesy features angry, so they exert pressure on Congress to cave. Those with means to buy courtesy features have a lot more ability to exert pressure than those without means (those impacted the most by the lack of healthcare subsidies).

(172 posts)Noem doesnt even try to make sense of the necessity of taking groups of travelers who have already been through a screening/vetting process and requiring them to now be screened again at the airport. If she really was concerned about the impact of the government shutdown on TSA, the pre-screen would at least alleviate some of that. But she and Rump dont want that. They want maximum chaos and inconvenience, so much so that it will piss off travelers and theyll pressure Dems to cave and submit to R demands re: ICE and CBP. The insanity is on purpose.

However, the TSA will evaluate on a case by case basis and adjust operations accordingly depending on staffing constraints, the spokesperson added in a statement.
Courtesy escorts, such as those for Members of Congress, have been suspended to allow officers to focus on the mission of securing Americas skies, the statement said.
The Transportation Security Administrations PreCheck program allows vetted passengers to forgo customary security check-in lines for quicker passage. U.S. Customs and Border Protections Global Entry, which offers similarly rapid check-ins for Americans at U.S. ports of entry, was also suspended. The TSA spokesperson did not address that status of that program on Sunday.
The suspension of both programs, first reported by The Washington Post, was supposed to start at 6 a.m. ET on Sunday, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem blamed congressional Democrats and said the lack of funding endangers Americans and puts personnel in a financial bind.
