Luigi Mangione will not face death penalty, judge rules

New York - Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty for allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, a federal district judge ruled.

The decision is a loss for federal prosecutors, who were adamant about pursuing the death penalty in the case.

Judge Margaret Garnett also ruled Friday to allow into Mangione’s trial evidence recovered from his backpack at the time of his arrest.

Law enforcement seized several items from Mangione’s backpack, including a handgun, a loaded magazine and a red notebook – key pieces of evidence that authorities have said tie him to the killing.

And, Thompson was certainly a part of the problem, including the unnecessary deaths of innocent people who likely didn't receive the healthcare the needed. That said, he was shot in the back and killed, which was a cowardly act. Mangione needs to account for that.

The rest of us can decide by the known evidence, including being found with the gun used in the murder and matching the photos of the crime and having a anti-insurance manifesto, etc

......upon searching Mangione's backpack again, police said they found a 3D-printed gun and a 3D-printed suppressor. Police stated that they also found a fake driver's license from New Jersey bearing the name "Mark Rosario". Reportedly, a man who checked into a Manhattan hostel in late November used an ID with the same name. Police later reported that shell casings found at the crime scene matched the gun found on Mangione. The police also said that when they arrested him, they found a 262-word handwritten document partly about the American healthcare system.

He certainly sounds innocent, lol

Under the law he is innocent until proven guilty and he has an able attorney. Unfortunately, for him, there is a photo of him committing the act, which will make his defense challenging at best.

If not, why? Would they not also be innocent until proven guilty?

You have yet to provide names. And I can't speak about other DU'ers making accusations. "He said ... she said... " whatever.

All I'm saying is that Mangione has not been convicted.

What I suspect, given that death penalty is now off the table, is that a plea deal is being worked out. But that is a suspicion, a guess, nothing more.

Innocent until proven guilty is an absolute in court and I unhesitatingly defend that right for everyone
The court of public opinion is an entirely different animal. If one is willing to scold fellow posters in one case for presuming guilt but cannot answer affirmatively in another is telling.

He has been neither convicted nor charged.

And I fully agree that everyone deserves their day in court.

However, as a private citizen who is not on the jury, in each case I saw a video in which someone shot a person dead in cold blood. My personal opinion is that both their murderers who should never see the outside of the prison again.

The local cops bungled the handling and searches - and they knew it. The cops self snitched on their own bodycams (at least the parts that weren’t muted) and then backfilled their mistake by claiming they had to ensure there were no bombs in his bags (hint: they didn’t call the bomb squad)

I can think of some rich white people for whom, nevertheless, I would oppose them receiving the death penalty, but I would not shed a single tear if one were carried out.
