House Democrats reconvene Jan. 6 committee to counter Trump on anniversary

House Democrats reconvened the House select committee on Jan. 6, 2021, for the fifth anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, reflecting on the significance of the riot and actions from President Trump they say risk the future of American democracy. Staged as a forum, it’s the first time the panel has been assembled since a series of blockbuster hearings over the summer of 2022 that unearthed new details about Trump’s involvement in resisting the transfer of power.
“Instead of holding those responsible for the attack accountable, Donald Trump and far-right extremists in Congress have attempted to rewrite history and whitewash the horrific events of Jan. 6,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said. “We will not let that happen.”
As the hearing was underway, the White House launched a new page dedicated to Jan. 6, blaming Democrats for having “masterfully reversed reality” and saying Trump “corrected a historic wrong” in pardoning those charged in connection with storming the building.
The panel was expanded to include Democratic members, and more than a dozen Democratic lawmakers also appeared as witnesses to recount their experiences that day. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said the “little propaganda site” shows Trump was still doubling down on his lies about the election and “demonstrates how insecure they are about the situation.”
