As insurers retreat from Obamacare, a working family is caught in the squeeze

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming Like millions of other Americans, Stacy Newton turns to Healthcare.gov to shop for health insurance for her family. The Affordable Care Act website, according to the government, is where consumers are supposed to find a menu of health insurance plans.
But for the Newtons and many others in the country, next years menu is severely limited: There is only one company offering ACA plans here and costs have risen steeply.
To continue health coverage for themselves and their two teenage children, the Newtons would have to pay an annual premium of $43,000 about a third of their gross income. It is the price of the cheapest plan available to the family from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming, the only ACA insurer left in Teton County.
This year, millions of American families that have relied on ACA, popularly known as Obamacare, are being squeezed on multiple sides: Premiums are rising, the covid-era subsidies that helped pay for those policies are shrinking, and there are fewer choices with insurers pulling out of some markets.
The squeeze here is a symptom of broader trouble in American health care. In western Wyoming and other regions, the expected rollback of enhanced subsidies has destabilized the economics of Obamacare, pushing some insurers to retreat from the government-supported market because it wont be profitable.
That is leaving consumers like the Newtons with little choice but to buy a pricey, unsubsidized policy from a local monopoly.
Next year, the number of counties with only one company providing Obamacare will jump from 72 to 146, according the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. That number is expected to rise further if, as appears likely, Congress fails to renew the enhanced subsidies.
Newton and her husband, Derek, each run a small business she is an independent sales representative, and he outfits vans and like many entrepreneurs, they have relied on the ACA for health insurance. But this year, the price of their policy rose 34 percent, and the federal subsidy that helped them pay for it is slated to go away. At the same time, they know they will need medical care: Last year, Newton, 51, was diagnosed with chronic leukemia.
Its terrifying, she said. Were not rich, were not poor. Were a standard, middle-class family, and somehow now I cant afford health insurance.

This of course, is the typical healthcare story we're going to see more of in the coming weeks....months, as well as people literally dying. Quite a few, because of their ignorant political beliefs.
Back in the 1970's, I was a young and foolish black kid, yet use to listen to the adults around me, occasionally speak of white folk hurting themselves to spite others.....mainly black folk. Naturally, I didn't understand such. Believed it was silly of one to harm his/herself, because of their hatred toward others, and now @67 years old, here we are.

(8,253 posts)How does she have leukemia but doesnt need treatment? Once you have it you are on meds for years before they let you try going treatment free.

(60,765 posts)Depending on other things, these high premiums would let them take a deduction for medical if they itemized. They should do a very serious look at what their finances are eliminating everything next year not absolutely needed.
She should not have cancelled because with leukemia she needs health insurance. Putting her husband and kids on a non ACA catastrophic plan while staying on ACA herself might help if they absolutely can't afford family ACA. Doing this is at the cost of taking the risk of paying a lot if any of them have high medical costs. Those plans usually don't cover preexisting conditions.
I don't know if the Republican House plan that has some help for small business owners buying into group plans has plans that cover pre existing conditions. If it does and the Senate and House sign on, that could help them if it is affordable. ( Note large number of ifs )
Given the number of ifs, they might have to consider if either could get a job for a company offering insurance.
All and all, the Republicans have messed up their lives.

(50,728 posts)because it's not very profitable to insure patients in a state like Wyoming. Fewer people means smaller risk pool.
So urban areas and more populous states will have more options to choose from. Supposedly competition is good for consumers.
There are rural minorities and urban whites, but MAGA is disproportionately rural so they are screwing themselves hardest.

(3,305 posts)... but it bears repeating: Members of the House and Senate get gold-plated healthcare, and, though they do pay premiums, a cursory search does not reveal how those costs compare to what the average citizen has to pay for similar coverage. But I'm willing to bet they get a much better deal through the FEHB (Federal Employees Health Benefits, or the DC SHOP) than we, The Great Unwashed, could ever have access to.
So, the infrastructure already exists for administering universal healthcare, but corporate greed once again rears its ugly head to roar its promise of vengeance upon any politician foolish enough to propose it.
Tiny countries like Thailand provide better access to healthcare, both to its citizens, and even to tourists that need it, than the richest country on Earth is willing to offer its residents. How does that scan for ya?
And, as a parting shot, note that "CORPORATISM" is what Mussolini preferred to call his form of government. And look where that got him.

(60,765 posts)Therefore even if you knew the monthly cost for the legislators or their staff, a reasonable comparison would be to the cost paid by people who through their job have medical benefits.
I retired a few decades ago, but back then the company I worked for put out a statement that showed my compensation package. The point was that wages were just part of it. The cost they bore for medical was much more than the potion I paid.

(68,884 posts)Obamacare allowed a lot of Americans to go to work for themselves. Republicans don't like that. They want people to be forced to work for large corporations.
