Merry boycotting: US shoppers avoid Trump-aligned businesses amid holiday season
Source: Guardian [UK]
Its the busiest shopping season of the year and a time when many are trying to figure out where to ethically spend their money.
Over the first year of Trumps second term, companies and institutions have fallen in line with the administrations anti-DEI and anti-immigration policies. As a result, people are supporting economic boycotts to show their discontent with the businesses capitulating to the president.
Over the Black Friday weekend, the groups behind the No Kings protests the largest days of mass protest in recent memory put their weight behind a campaign called We Aint Buying It, calling on people to not shop at Target, Home Depot and Amazon during the marquee week of holiday deals.

I'm all in for boycotting fascist-friendly MAGA supporting business, both large and small.

(14,917 posts)Not just sales slightly down (which I think is perhaps somewhat in the cards?) - but that Target for instance is having a significantly worse slump than nearest competitors. That's when I'll now there was a noticeable impact.

What stores in your city do you want to remain open? Local hardware store? Independent book shop? Family run deli? Make sure you are buying from them whenever applicable.

(129,333 posts)as I can. It is no hardship for me to boycott companies, corporations, etc., have been doing it since the early '70's. People used to ask me how I managed to shop with the extensive boycott list I had, how I kept them all in my head. Wasn't/isn't hard.

(10,257 posts)I live in an old neighborhood in San Francisco where chain stores are not allowed. We dont even have the big grocery stores. So of course I support local businesses. Theyre easily accessible.
I dont judge anyone who falls back on the big chains though, if thats whats available and affordable. Better to order from Amazon than drive 30 miles for a garden hose.

(26 posts)I totally agree, we just have to do the best we can. No one will be perfect so it's about making a big enough dent so the companies notice and they change and encouraging as many people as possible to do what they can. A lot of people imperfectly boycotting a company is more powerful than a few "perfect" boycotters. Encouraging people to do what is within their means I think results in making the boycotts more accessible.
For Amazon what people can do is cancel their Amazon Prime subscription and then wait until their carts go above the free shipping threshold which is typically $25 or $35.

(54,533 posts)so what does my sister do? She bought ALL of the gifts from Amazon.
Boycotts are the way to go. They work well...just look at the Jimmy Kimmel show.
I was listening to Borowitz speak about this yesterday...

(44 posts)Wanted to buy a book on my local library's 'wish list'. Bit the bullet and went to Powell's, even though it was more expensive.
I remember when I used to love shopping at Amazon, but not now. It is not just their politics, but their shoddy merchandise, bad delivery, and the fact that I have never been able to talk to a real human there about my complaints.

(32,640 posts)They know me well enough now that I can call them and ask them to order something for me. Look for one in your area, if possible.

(21,394 posts)I know someone who owns a local bookstore. His bookstore carries Amazon exclusives. Guess how he gets them? Yup, Amazon. So it he gets them for $20 shipped, he'll sell them for like $26 or so to unsuspecting customers.

(29,465 posts)What they have done to the retail landscape is horrific. Downtown Seattle used to be a cheerful, bustling shopping mecca. Now it is full of empty storefronts or a few national, pricey retailers. It's crammed full of tech workers who won't walk into a brick and mortar store to buy anything. They don't seem to care about supporting any local enterprise.
I live in an apartment building that has a lot of tech company workers and wealthy foreign students and the package situation is ludicrously out of hand. They had to take away one of our shared spaces for a package room. The front office staff is overwhelmed with packages. When the pandemic hit, you could barely get in the door, even though local grocery stores were open.

(4,010 posts)Since I'm in a small town, I use online shopping quite a bit. Wayfair is fast replacing much of what Amazon used to provide for me. Mostly. I did use them in a limited way for half of our ten grandkids for Christmas.
I have to go elsewhere for books, but that's okay.

(26,679 posts)But I feel skivvy buying something from there. No Home depot and my Amazon buying has been substantially reduced to maybe 3 times this year.

(14,210 posts)Because I live on an Island where most shops sell seashells and dive gear and I have to drive to Miami for any real bargains. I did boycott on the Black Friday days but Ive ordered essentials once that was over. But I promise to try extra hard in the New Year. AND great news, we are getting an Aldi in January so at least I can avoid the dastardly Publix stores.

(75,684 posts)..."dastardly".
I found the Publix in Key West to be superior to the Albertson's and it's an employee owned company.
The employees, either through direct equity accounts or a 401k/a own a third of the company.
They have 3 seats on the BOD. Yeah, the family owns 20% but they don't control the board.
Dastardly was a word i didn't expect to see describe that outfit.

(10 posts)Cancelled prime when Bezos showed his ugly bald head at inauguration. After 20 years. But I doubt they miss little me. Thriftbooks is great for ordering books. There is nothing that amazon offers that one can't get elsewhere. Cancelled Hulu, too, with the Kimmel debacle, as well as paramount+. CBS/Weiss is now trash. Amazon needs to suffer the large scale defeat such as ABC did.

Calling our congressional reps works. It really does. They actually DO pay attention to the number of calls they get. Are your reps republican? Even more reason to call them! It takes ten minutes or less to make three calls. No joke. Not sure what to say? Go here. They have lots of text samples on dozens of issues to get you started.

The last time we lit up the Capitol switchboard was the financial crisis of 2008. It's time we used our phones for more than posting on social media.
I call once a week after my physical therapy, but I should up it to at least three times a week. I do it in my car & often repeat messages I used before. Just FYI, I have only gotten a live person once. Also, don't forget to leave your name & zip code at the end of your message.
