Rollins threatens Minnesota's SNAP benefits under new 'pilot program'

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins sent a letter on Tuesday to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) requiring him to conduct recertifications for Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in four counties.

“As part of the recertification process, ensure SNAP households in Hennepin, Ramsey, Washington, and Wright counties meet all eligibility requirements for SNAP, including by accounting for the income and resources of any excluded household members, conducting in-person interviews, and using federal eligibility tools like the improved, cost-free Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program database,” Rollins wrote.

“Upon review of the information obtained during the recertification process, make determinations as to eligibility of SNAP benefits for each SNAP household in Hennepin, Ramsey, Washington, and Wright counties and unenroll any ineligible households,” she added. SNAP recipients in all 50 states are frequently required to recertify themselves by providing documentation that ensures their eligibility for the program.

However, in recent months, the Agriculture secretary has alleged that deceased people and individuals committing fraud are receiving federal food benefits, prompting the Trump administration to require “everyone” to reapply for the program.
Rollins’s letter to Walz follows President Trump’s remarks bashing the Minnesota governor for his state’s large Somali immigrant population, which the president said was “garbage.”

I’m sure red states are eager to re-certify SNAP recipients so they can deny aid to as many as possible. The Republican war on the poor and on minorities continues.

I will be one of the casualties of this greed and avarice. I will starve and die because the rethugs want me to.

No, not right this moment. But, our single income is very shaky and we both have issues, so we are just not worth the greedy in our society who control everything and made sure that being rich the only real achievement in our society worth noticing.

I have no way to stop it. Aid would have helped, but there is none to be had.

And, some people wonder why I am 'giving up'.

I am not 'giving up'... they are. I cannot survive without some help. They want me to die so they will not offer anything. ANYTHING.

So, I will pass like so many others in my position. Many, many, many others. We are the dregs of society and since we are not rich, we do not matter to anyone.

ANYONE. If we did, we would not be in this position. Remember that.

And often not enough for most people to get through an entire month. But they're going to nitpick individual recipients to find some disqualifying factor, a process that will cost far more than the meager SNAP benefits people receive.

"Ah, so your mother sent your daughter $25 for her 8th birthday and you didn't report it? No more food assistance for you and your family."

They are looking for criminality in the wrong place, but that's not surprising.

It's not like they're going to put themselves in any actual danger. Attacking pregnant women and old people seems safer.

My adult daughter's father (with whom I'm still very close friends) lives up in Oregon and is on disability. He sent me a screen shot of his application for LIHEAP and it is disgusting. It quite literally asks if the applicant has any income from recycling cans, donating plasma or if they ever receive money in birthday cards. How cruel and inhumane can you be?

I was on public assistance many years ago when my children were young. They would go to great lengths to find that extra $10 or $20 that people might not be declaring, even if it was a gift or money found on the ground.

Sometimes, I needed that small windfall to buy luxuries like toilet paper or toothpaste not covered by food stamps. Sometimes social workers would even invade people's homes to make sure there was no man living there. I've seen people dropped in a heartbeat over the smallest infraction. It dawned on me that it was a way to keep people in poverty by discouraging any attempt to better their lives.

Once again, the process of trying to uncover what they call "fraud" was not only demeaning, but undoubtedly it cost more than the amount they were attempting to save. We've seen the same thing with states that require drug testing for people on any kind of government assistance - it enriched some medical labs (Rick Scott), but cost the government far more than they ever saved. So the wealthy people like Rick Scott go free, but some poor families end up hungry.
