Democrats Remember Sandy Hook Shooting and Renew Calls for Gun Reform

As many remember the tragic 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, in which a shooter killed 20 children and six adults on scene, as well as himself and his mother, Democrats are renewing calls for gun reform.
The posts come amid news of two horrific mass shootings this weekend, one at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where two people died and another at a Hannukah celebration in Sydney that killed 16 people, and dozens more injured.
Why It Matters
On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, marking the deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. elementary school, while the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022 is the second deadliest to date.
The Sandy Hook shooting sparked debates about gun control, with significant focus on the AR-15 rifle that had been used, and questions over the need for semi-automatic rifles to be legally available. Some Democrats have pushed for tighter gun laws, while many Republicans oppose new restrictions and emphasize that gun ownership is protected by the Second Amendment.

(13,538 posts)Australia has very restrictive gun laws, and sadly has just had a mass shooting/terror attack. I've seen gun nuts pointing to this as "proof" that gun laws don't work.
Australia has had NINE mass shootings (with four or more victims) in the past TEN years.
Mass shootings in the US are so fucking common that they're impossible to reliably keep track of. This list of mass shootings in the US (with four or more victims) so far this year is from Wikipedia:
January.......25
February......21
March..........31
April.............23
May..............45
June.............59
July..............63
August.........41
September...33
October........34
November....23
Now let's talk about gun laws.

GUN VIOLENCE ARCHIVE
The Violence Project
I know in the past, data from those 2 have been cited on DU (and there have unfortunately been WAY WAY too many mass shootings
).

Similarly for Ulvade, Parkland, and even here in PA, the upcoming 10th anniversary of the Nickle Mines shooting, where 10 Amish girls were shot (5 died). They eventually tore down the school building and built a new one.

(13,538 posts)We've become numb to this shit, it's just a part of everyday life in 'Murica.
We banned lawn darts because kids were getting hurt. We insisted that cars have seat belts and improved safety standards because people were getting hurt and killed. But we can't do a single motherfucking thing to reign in gun violence because some judges many years ago misinterpreted the 2nd Amendment (that pesky little part about a "well regulated militia"
.
My sister was killed with a gun (domestic violence) and I refuse to sit down, shut up, and forget it.

James Brady worked tirelessly to break his own party (one of the few who suffered the fate of gun violence and worked to do something about it versus someone like the loon Scalise, who was on his deathbed, and who then semi-recovered only to double down on letting these guns run rampant).

And I am sorry to hear about your sister. It's insane that it has gone on this long.
The only "positive" was that I saw an article over the weekend, that was outside of LBN because it was purportedly published during a fusillade of a Friday dump of news, and it was about the NRA - NRA forced to sell off its investments to pay off bills as membership declines, report says
