Water reaches roofs in Washington towns, forcing water rescues and evacuations

Source: cnn

Updated 8:49 PM EST, Thu December 11, 2025

What we're covering

• Active water rescues: Rivers across western Washington are bursting their banks and inundating towns and homes with fast-moving floodwater, forcing water rescues, some by helicopter.

• Evacuations underway: As many as 100,000 people in Washington face potential evacuations as the flood danger rises. Many are in Skagit County, where the entire 100-year floodplain has been ordered to evacuate.

• Rivers rise even amid light rain: Scattered light rain continues across parts of western Washington, but it’ll have little impact on river flooding. Some rivers won’t crest until Friday, and even those that have crested will remain dangerously high over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Washington is under a state of emergency after back-to-back atmospheric rivers brought torrential rain that has caused rivers to overflow and sparked evacuations, mudslides, and water rescues.

Multiple rivers are at or forecast to reach major flood stage, and in some cases, including the Skagit and Snohomish rivers, the flooding will likely be historic.

The National Weather Service said catastrophic -- and potentially life-threatening -- river flooding and widespread urban flooding are expected through Thursday afternoon.

and where we are got bad but not as bad as other places in the state. Flooded roads and yards and lots of rain. We feel very lucky considering the Hoquiam river is right across the 2 lane country road from us. I'm sending my best vibes to those who have lost so much. That's the weather news.

In the scared and sad news, my KittyBoy has been missing for 2 LONG days. I need everybody's best vibes for him to get back here faster please. Thank you for you time and vibes.

Both the warm temperature, which keeps
mountains from holding snow, but also
causing the atmospheric river there.

But Atmospheric Rivers themselves are a fairly common, semi-annual occurrence.

Used to be called a "Pineapple Express".

Supposedly it was 70 degrees in Leavenworth WA (on the east slope of the Cascades) yesterday. That's insanity.

It's been in the mid-fifties in the Puget Sound region which is unusual for this time of year.
