Trump tells India to stop 'dumping rice' on US or face new tariffs

Source: The Independent

Tuesday 09 December 2025 07:40 EST

Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on India for “dumping” rice in the U.S., piling pressure on a major economic and strategic partner. The threatened levy would be on top of the 50 percent import tariff that Washington put on the South Asian country earlier this year.

Trump’s comments came while responding to complaints that imports from India and other Asian countries were damaging American producers during a meeting at the White House with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, lawmakers, and farmers.

The President unveiled a $12bn aid package for U.S. farmers amid mounting pressure over rising consumer prices and persistent inflation, attributed in no small part to his sweeping tariffs on major world economies.

Analysts say voter dissatisfaction over rising prices can severely damage the prospects of Trump’s Republican party ahead of next year’s mid-term elections.

Article I, Section 8, the Commerce Clause - just to refresh our memories about who is in charge of tariffs.

On second thought, never mind.

What happened to open markets and price competition? Rice prices have been out of hand! Arborio prices have finally started to come down at one point it was $16 for 32oz of riceselect but it has come down to about $9. $5 for generic which is finally available again. before Covid, it was $3. If you want to save American jobs from India, do something about the call centers and all the other jobs lost to cheaper tech labor.

So some American rice grower tells him that it is cheap rice from India that is hurting their
sales so he goes after India instead of his half baked tariffs and other shit that was his fault.
In the good old days we had a U.S.D.A., local extension services, and some of the best farmers
in the world working to make high quality products that there was a demand for in America and
world wide and the USAID bought tons of American rice to help the poor in Africa and Asia too.

BTW America can grow some damn fine rice.

Just to the people who are growing the product.

I know that the orange gibbon is an idiot but this is a new low. Blaming the creators for the fact that the importers are the ones bringing the rice to this country. I doubt that the Indian nation is now creating covert ways to sneak the product into the country, like a freaking drug run or something.

But, he is still sitting in the Oval Office and his cronies are still doing his bidding without interference, so...
