B.C. to levy tolls on U.S. trucks travelling to Alaska

Source: CTV News (BC)

British Columbia Premier David Eby says his government is introducing new legislation to remove trade barriers with other provinces while also levying fees on American commercial trucks transiting the province on their way to Alaska.

The premier announced the proposed legislation Thursday in response to the economic threat of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods entering that country.

Speaking to reporters from the front lawn of the B.C. legislature, which had been draped in a large Canadian flag for the occasion, Eby said the new legislation would also give his government the flexibility to “respond rapidly” to executive orders from U.S. President Donald Trump as they arise.

Trump followed through on his threat to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods and a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy as of midnight Tuesday. But a one-month reprieve appeared to have been granted by the White House just moments before Eby spoke.

One thing they can do is leave IFTA and replace it with a Canadian only equivalent.

One reason why cross border trade with US and Canada is easy is because trucks can go across USA and Canada without having to be registered in every state and province.

Mexico does not take part in IFTA. Mexican trucks in the US have to be registered in the US, and vice versa. When I worked hauling glass, our company would haul the glass to a Schneider yard in Laredo, TX... A Mexican truck would take over from there.

Should all the Canadian provinces pull out of IFTA (in favour of a trans Canada alternative) the number of trucks that cross the border would go down significantly, and trucks that do go across the border would have to be dual registered.

hit back at people who defy him—let’s see him do that to an entire country. He can’t throw them in prison. He can’t fire them from their jobs. He can’t throw them out a window. He is powerless, one man against a country—and Canada is purposely setting themselves up to fire back immediately every time donny makes one of his petulant toddler moves. Personally, I love it.
