Trump Blames Democrats for Looming Shutdown While Republicans Control Congress

Source: meidasnews.com

Trump Pushes Pelosi-Era Budget Extension

J.D. Wolf 2 hours ago

As the deadline for government funding looms, Trump is calling on Republicans to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) that would extend the budget originally passed under former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Despite his frequent attacks on Democratic spending priorities, Trump is now urging his party to temporarily maintain those same funding levels to avoid a shutdown.

In a post on Truth Social, he framed the situation as though Democrats were the ones threatening to shut down the government, despite the fact that Republicans control both chambers of Congress. One would think Democrats would pounce on a CR for a Pelosi budget extension, but Trump has been impounding funds and obstructing those spending priorities with his DOGE initiatives overseen by Elon Musk.

Trump’s attempt to shift blame ignores the reality that his party has the votes to pass whatever funding bill they choose. With Republican majorities in both the House and Senate, a shutdown would be the result of GOP infighting rather than Democratic obstruction.

Hardline conservatives have already signaled opposition to a clean CR, complicating Speaker Mike Johnson’s efforts to push the stopgap measure through. If a shutdown occurs, it will be because Republicans could not unite behind their own plan—not because of Democratic resistance.

I hope people understand what's happening here.

The Democrats are actually standing together. There is NO VOTE from our side to help them pass their BS budget, and Mike Johnson is FACING A BUDGET SHUTDOWN.

This is what you want from Democrats. Not supporting their agenda and fighting BACK!

This is not necessarily true. They will still need to overcome a possible filibuster in the Senate.

Budget bills are exempt from filibuster rules. They only need 51 votes to pass the Senate.

Budget bills are only exempt from the filibuster if passed through the reconciliation process.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/13/politics/budget-resolution-reconciliation-spending-bills-explainer/index.html

In Congress, what’s the difference between a budget resolution, reconciliation and spending bills?

The current continuing resolution, which passed right before Christmas, only extends government funding until March 14. That means Congress needs to pass a new funding bill by then. That could mean all 12 bills get rolled into one massive measure referred to as an “omnibus bill” or split up into several bills, known as “minibuses.”

Otherwise, another short-term extension would be needed to avoid a shutdown

So do Democrats have leverage here?
In fact, they do. Because there are a number of House Republicans who will vote against any funding bill, Democratic votes will be needed in the House. And since the bill can be filibustered in the Senate, 60 votes will be needed in a chamber where Republicans hold 53 seats. That means only a bipartisan deal can keep the lights on for the entire federal government.

I KNOW you want to help. You want to jump in and save the world.

DON’T!!! It will be hard. DON’T!

Never save the enemy of the world when he - and his Party - is committing suicide.

For fun: Make one of your bargaining options the repeal of the 2001, 2003, and 2017 tax cuts.
Watch‘em howl!!!

Blame innocent people for his own criminality and wrongdoing so they have to spend time and energy correcting, freeing him to get on to his next outrage.
