WASHINGTON First-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, died Tuesday night after suffering a medical emergency, according to two House Democratic lawmakers who were informed of his death. He was 70-years-old and had just taken the oath of office in January.
At a closed-door Democratic meeting, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., announced that Turner had died and that his family has been notified, according to one lawmaker who attended the meeting.
Another Democrat who saw Turner in the underground tunnel that that connects the Capitol with the Cannon Building said that it appeared Turner was having a medical emergency early Tuesday afternoon. Capitol Police were notified and went to assist him, the lawmaker said.
Turner was first elected to Congress in November and formerly served as the mayor of Houston.

(1,459 posts)Unfortunately, I can't imagine Texas Gov Abbott will be in any hurry to schedule a new election for his replacement.

He was apparently sick but the coincidence of timing is, well, creepy.
Keep in mind these two OPs were within moments of each other and I read the warning OP first and then read that he died also last night. Fucking creepy!
Had the medical emergency early Tuesday afternoon, so he couldnt have warned republicans last night regarding Medicaid.
This post says he had a guest at the address to congress
That is the post I refer to above and then immediately see this post of his demise.
Edit to add: time stamp in the post is 5:29 pm March 4. So how could he have died earlier in the day?

(2,742 posts)Although all the Democrats looked pissed or upset throughout, I remember when I saw him in one shot, thinking it looks like that guy (didnt know who he was at the time) was having a heart attack, his face looked so pained.
I do blame Trump for his passing.

(62 posts)I live in Houston, and his last appearances have been concerning. He had oral/bone cancer in his jaw and had clearly dropped quite a bit of weight.
Hes no longer in pain
blessings to his family and loved ones.

(174,853 posts)My former father-in-law worked for Sylvester. There is a concept in palliative care called the "last good day/hour", Slyvester visited my father-in-law in the hospice on his last good day. First the security team came by and checked things out and then Slyvester came in and spent a good half hour with my former father-in-law. It was sweet. The next day my father in law declined drastically and passed a couple of days later.

He was in Washington D.C. Tuesday night for the State of the Union, according to his X account.
Before his tenure as mayor, Turner served in the Texas House of Representatives for nearly 27 years. He had also run for mayor in 1991 and 2003.
This means that the Democrats will be down a house seat until Abbott calls a special election.

(21,508 posts)The election is set by the governor. He will certainly delay it to the furthest possible date, since it's a guaranteed Democratic win.
On the flip side, this was done in NY as well.
