Democratic Rep. Al Green removed after disrupting Trump's speech

Source: NBC News

March 4, 2025, 9:37 PM EST / Updated March 4, 2025, 10:00 PM EST

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, was removed from the House chamber Tuesday night after he disrupted President Donald Trump's joint address to Congress. Green, who has long pushed to impeach Trump dating to his previous term in office, stood and shook his cane toward the president in the opening minutes of his speech.

Other lawmakers cheered and booed Green, causing further chaos on the House floor as Trump paused. The uproar prompted House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to read aloud from House rules. “Members are directed to uphold and maintain decorum in the House and to cease any further disruptions,” Johnson said, an admonishment aimed at Green.

After Green refused to sit and allow Trump to continue, Johnson called for the House sergeant at arms to remove him from the chamber. “Nah nah nah nah, goodbye,” Republicans chanted as Green was escorted from the room. Outside the chamber, Green told NBC News that as "a person of conscience," he believes Trump "has done things that I think we cannot allow to continue."

"This whole budget that he has is one that is going to cause Medicaid to be cut, and when he said he had a mandate, it triggered something. It really did. Because he doesn’t have a mandate, and he doesn’t have a mandate to cut health care from poor people," Green said. The chamber was filled with other signs of protest and pushback.

BLUE Texas "in the House"! I.e., the home of Reps. Al Green and Jasmine Crockett (and previously the late Sheila Jackson-Lee). Love his "Constitution" tie!

People see me quote this one all the time (all those damn "buyouts" that they are "promising" were NOT authorized by "consequence of appropriations made by law" )-

Article I

Section 9.

(snip)

No money shall be drawn from the treasury, but in consequence of appropriations made by law; and a regular statement and account of receipts and expenditures of all public money shall be published from time to time.

Memo to the other Democratic reps.: Those paddles with the slightly huffy messages on them are the very definition of "Too Little, Too Late." Your wimpy-assed response was nothing short of a political wet dream for trump, delivered with gift-wrapping to the Fascist-In-Chief. You need to get angry and get busy, immediately.

And God bless Texas Representative Al Green for his shout-out. He and Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett speak for me and the rest of the 4.8 million Texans who voted against trump. Just a little something for our resident Texas-haters to keep in mind...

Didn't they try to remove Rep Joe Wilson in 2009 for his outburst?

Rep. Al Green:
"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President's remarks. While I disagree with the President's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility."
