GOP Sen. James Lankford: U.S. won't invade Greenland

Source: NBC News

Jan. 12, 2025, 1:19 PM EST

Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., on Sunday dismissed President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to acquire Greenland by military force, saying, “The United States is not going to invade another country. That’s not who we are.”

Trump “speaks very boldly on a lot of things,” Lankford said, adding: “We’ve seen this over how he’s done negotiations, whether it be for real estate or whether — how he served as a great president just four years ago.”

Lankford’s comments come as Trump has shown a renewed interest in annexing Greenland over the last few weeks.

In a statement announcing his pick to be ambassador to Denmark last month, Trump wrote: “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

For the love of Pete, the world has gone mad. I'm glad to hear a moment of sanity from a Republican senator. Keep the sanity coming, please.

Knowing how GOPhers lie, it seems the invasion is imminent......

The senator seems to have forgotten a few little details----like Iraq (twice), Afghanistan, Vietnam, Mexico, Cuba, Panama.......

What a maroon. They seem to grow them with fertilizer in GOPee-land.

is that most people realize Trump is a loudmouth and not quite right in the head; he is not to be taken seriously.

Republican folk won't say that out loud, but their actions might reflect that.

Time for the quiet voices in politics to stand up and speak out, or at least try to minimize Trump's potential damage.

were Grenada and Panama. And there was all this talk of "the command and control center" in Grenada that ended up being a phone booth!

Lankford also called TSF "President Trump." He isn't President until the 20th. President Biden is.

The interviewer did not correct him, but did refer to him as "Mr. Trump." So she gets a C rather than an F.

Normalize, normalize, normalize.

Lankford: Trump “speaks very boldly on a lot of things,” Lankford said, adding: “We’ve seen this over how he’s done negotiations, whether it be for real estate or whether — how he served as a great president just four years ago.”

He covers well, using "boldly" when "recklessly" is a far better fit. And he stopped himself after saying "whether" as he was heading down a rabbit hole, perhaps about to praise Trump's agreement to end our engagement in Afghanistan. But there is another drawback to what Lankford is claiming: people quickly pick up on style in place of substance and it quickly breaks down. Gaza will be the first big test. Remember how it took over a year for Kissinger to negotiate the shape of a table for the Vietnam negotiations in Paris? Oh, just 4 years ago Trump was mired down with Covid-19 and had to be bailed out by Biden. Lankford tried to put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig.
