GOP Senator Blames Americans for Most of Their Health Problems
Source: Yahoo
Americans who are sick and dying should mostly blame themselves for their health condition. Thats what Sen. Roger Marshall said as Republicans are poised to cut health care access and increase costs for millions of Americans.
Look, about 70 percent of your health outcomes are determined by you, Marshall said Sunday on Fox News Sunday Morning Futures. Its determined by what you eat and what youre surrounded by. By the time you come to my office as a doctor, I can impact maybe 10 or 20 percent of your health outcomes.
Marshall did not cite where he got those percentage figures from. A former OBGYN, he is a leader of the newly-formed Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Caucus. He has said the caucus will work with Dr. Mehmet Oz and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Trumps choice for secretary of Health and Human Services to improv[e] health outcomes by prioritizing nutrition, providing access to affordable, nutrient-dense foods, and focusing on primary care availability to tackle the root causes of chronic diseases. Kennedy has frequently spouted anti-science talking points, including opposing vaccines (saying that theres no vaccine that is, you know, safe and effective.) Kennedy has also threatened to fire National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists, cut NIH and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) budgets, and curtail infectious disease research in favor of preventative, alternative, and holistic approaches to health.
Marshall said that MAHA will address nutrition, chronic disease issues and the mental health crisis.

(187,690 posts)Marshall has voted in favor of repealing the Affordable Care Act and against protections for Americans who have preexisting conditions. He supports a free market approach to health care and has advocated for fewer restrictions on physician-owned hospitals, an industry he and his family have been heavily invested in. Marshall helped lead the transition of a surgery center into a physician-owned hospital in Kansas. And in the three years before 2020, Marshalls wife earned somewhere between $195,000-450,000 from real estate investments in physician-owned hospitals, according to a 2020 report in The Kansas City Star.
Just like Jesus said, The poor will always be with us, Marshall told STAT News in 2017. There is a group of people that just dont want health care and arent going to take care of themselves.

As of 2023, Kansas's obesity rate is 35.9%, ranking it 12th in the nation for obesity prevalence: This dirtbag has been in office since 2017. He has been a failure for his own state.
Marshall, who represents a rural state, supports farm subsidies, such as federal crop insurance. His support for subsidies gained him the 2016 endorsement of the Kansas Farm Bureau in the Republican primary.
Marshall supports repealing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Rethugs have tried this angle before, in trying to avoid coverage for PrEP and I think contraception -- they didn't get far because of the ACA requirements, so that are tackling that. Wait until they find out that straight folks get HIV too!

President Donald Trump's administration last week relaxed school-lunch rules championed by former first lady Michelle Obama and meant to make school lunches healthier.
The program is now again making room on menus for noodles, biscuits and other foods made of refined grains. The White House is scaling back school lunch standards requiring that only whole grains be served. The standards were implemented in 2012 under former President Barack Obama.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week said only half the grains served in school lunches will need to be whole grains.
Low-fat chocolate milk and a final goal of limiting sodium will also be scrapped with the relaxed rules.

(3,250 posts)We make large strides to shrink the amount of uncompensated care that hospitals have to absorb, by expanding Medicaid and giving insurance subsidies. But now, were going to undo all that, by cutting Medicaid and/or turning into block grants - which can be used for what-the-fuck-ever a state wishes to? More hospitals bottom lines are going to drop right back into the red, resulting in more closures, especially in rural areas - areas like every damned red state. This will echo back up the ladder to Pharma and medical device companies, as spending on their products will necessarily be cut back at all levels of healthcare.
This is goddamned stupid.

This is sheer nonsense.
There was cancer before there were GMO foods or pesticides.
In fact, it goes back some 5000 years.
Also, there are some diseases that have a genetic basis.
I was diagnosed with Crohns; four years later I was diagnosed with lymphoma.
I have since learned that some patients with Crohns are at higher risk for lymphoma.
This senator should visit a couple of children hospitals.

(8,075 posts)Despite the fact that it's so obvious that if we have better curricula in public schools - teach things like nutrition (I did in junior high, and I'm maybe not the best example, seeing as that was in the 50's and knowledge of what is good nutrition has come along way since them, in addition to the fact that allergies to some foods make it vastly more difficult.) It would also not hurt to teach actual civics
Of course he wants to squeeze every possible penny out of public education too..

(13,009 posts)That does not make him an expert on all things medical. In fact, his expertise is limited to one half of the population. He is not a nutritionist, nor a psychiatrist nor an epidemiologist. If he doesn't cite the source for his "facts" then he's pulling the numbers out of his ass.

(49,444 posts)It's my fault if I get sick (and perhaps die) because corporations polluted the air and water which I ingested. Or industrial farmers used hormones and antibiotics on the meat, pork, and poultry that I consumed. Or commercial farmers who sprayed poisonous weed-killers on the produce that either I ate or the meat, pork, and poultry that I ate. Or the state and/or federal government agencies that downplayed COVID, telling the population not to mask up, or get vaccines, or go out in the general public when having an active virus.
And it's my fault for not having enough money to buy organic meat, poultry, pork, fish, produce.
And it's my fault for having cancer based on my family's DNA.
Yup, I don't deserve healthcare funding.
