Explosion Rocks One of Russia's Largest Refineries in Major Aerial Strike

Source: Newsweek

Published Jan 12, 2025 at 4:56 AM EST

Ukraine attacked an oil refinery in western Russia on Saturday, according to a Ukrainian official and Russian sources. Kyiv struck the Taneco oil refinery in Russia's Tatarstan region, Andriy Kovalenko, an official with Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said in a statement. Newsweek has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment via email.

Why It Matters

The facility is one of Russia's "largest and most modern refineries," able to process more than 16 million tons of oil each year, Kovalenko said. Kyiv also attacked the site, located in the city of Nizhnekamsk, in April 2024, damaging the plant's main processing unit, according to the official.

Ukraine has doggedly targeted Russia's oil facilities, attempting to cut off Moscow's access to supplies propping up its war effort.

The Taneco plant "plays a key role in providing fuel to the Russian army," Kovalenko said. "Knocking out refineries and oil depots directly affects the Russian Federation's ability to wage an intensive war."

They're already dealing with diminished storage capacity because of Ukraine attacks on depots. With the inability to actually refine the crude they're pulling out of the ground, their only option is to shut down production. This will be a big issue, even if the war ends quickly, as restarting those wells is an expensive proposition using expertise and equipment they likely don't have access to because of the sanctions.

Not cheap and the war isn't going to end soon. Our erstwhile EU and AsiaPac allies are ready to pick up much of the slack.

Putin will have his pet poodle back in office within days..........

#1 Trump has already stated he could stop the war in Ukraine in one day......No one asked how.....he could withdraw any and all U.S. Military support and financial aid from Ukraine.

#2 NATO could remain, but with no support, militarily or financially, from the U.S., Our allies would be immediately subjected to the will of Putin.......

The Hague has concrete evidence that Putin supplied chemical weapons to his pet poodle Assad in Syria, for Assad to use against towns where he "suspected" the rebels were entrenched......Every Man, Woman, Child, Infant in those towns died an excruciating death within a few minutes of those weapons exploding....We had troops in Syria, serving to protect the rebels, until magically, one day, Trump ordered them withdrawn literally overnight, leaving the U.S. base intact with everything, including weapons, to be taken over by Assad...Cute

all of Russia's refineries, not only stop their military from moving but get their entire population
to have to walk everywhere. Then we'll see how long it takes for Russians to get rid of Putin.
