Donald Trump Sentenced In Historic New York Hush Money Trial

Source: HuffPost

President-elect Donald Trump received a sentence of unconditional discharge — or effectively no punishment — at a Friday hearing with New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, which puts an end to his hush money trial more than seven months after his unprecedented conviction.

Trump appeared in court on a video feed from Mar-a-Lago, his Florida club, wearing a red and white striped tie and a frown. He was seated alongside his attorney Todd Blanche, with U.S. flags in the background.

Trump initially allowed Blanche to speak for him, averting his eyes from the camera. But he took the opportunity to address the court when Merchan offered it to him.

“This has been a very terrible experience. I think it’s been a tremendous setback for New York and the New York court system,” Trump said. “It was done to damage my reputation so I’d lose the election, and obviously it didn’t work.”

Trump sentenced in historic Manhattan hush money case

Source: Courthouse News Service

January 10, 2025

MANHATTAN (CN) — President-elect Donald Trump was sentenced to unconditional discharge on Friday on 34 counts of falsifying business records, cementing his status as a convicted felon in New York City just 10 days before his inauguration.

New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan had suggested last week that he would hit Trump with the unique sentence, which keeps Trump from having to serve a tangible punishment like community service or a fine, but would preserve the jury’s guilty verdict against the former and soon-to-be president.

Thrice delayed, the sentencing went ahead as planned Friday amid tireless efforts from Trump and his legal team to put the hearing on ice. Trump had claimed that, as the president-elect, he is immune from prosecution and cannot be sentenced. But despite taking those arguments all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, his efforts proved futile.

Trump was already the first president in the nation’s history to be charged with a crime; now, he’s also the first to be convicted and sentenced. The monumental criminal case came to a head this past June, when a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of fudging his company records to cover up a sprawling hush money scheme aimed at quelling bad press during his 2016 presidential campaign.

. . . It is still important, as a matter of law, that a president-elect was unable to prevail on a claim of immunity, that the Supreme Court recognized the limits of its jurisdiction, and that a guilty verdict that was rightfully obtained by the people of the State of New York is now formalized and finalized!

Not the slick remake…the OG:

In the film, Paul Muni, the gangster in the title role, sees his first Tommy Gun in action. Immediately he sees its strategic value.

“Lookit, Johnny, you can carry it around like a baby!”

So, Scarface gets his mitts on one and takes over his gang, followed by his community’s Prohibition Era liquor monopoly. In the process, three children playing on the sidewalk are shot. Then the concerned citizens petition the police commissioner to do something about it. Made me eyes water.

In those days (1932) We the People weren’t confused as to what was possible, because that’s what they did. Today, we can only say, “Only in the movies…”

If you get a chance to see it, I believe you would appreciate its parallels.

"A day after Jimmy Carter’s funeral, where Donald Trump had to hear about all the character traits he lacks, Mr. Trump wasn’t in the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse on Friday morning to hear his felony sentence pronounced. He appeared virtually from Mar-a-Lago in front of two American flags, along with his attorney (and choice for deputy attorney general) Todd Blanche.

This peculiar reunion, seven months after Trump’s conviction for business fraud, contained little suspense. Justice Juan Merchan, who had presided with considerable patience and wisdom over the six-week trial, tipped his hand on Jan. 3 when he wrote that Trump’s sentence would be “unconditional release.”

This sounds like no punishment at all but was in fact a “masterstroke,” retired New York Judge George Grasso told me as we walked out of the courtroom.

The proof lies in the Supreme Court’s one-paragraph, 5-to-4 ruling, issued Thursday night, that “a brief virtual hearing” and a sentence of “unconditional discharge” left a “relatively insubstantial” burden of time on the president-elect. By imposing no penalty, Merchan sharply increased the odds that Trump will be known as a felon for the rest of his life." [etc.]
