House Passes Bill to Deport Unauthorized Immigrants Charged With Minor Crimes

Forty-eight Democrats joined Republicans in supporting legislation that aims to deport more migrants charged with nonviolent crimes, a first salvo in a broader crackdown.

The House passed a bill on Tuesday that would target undocumented immigrants charged with nonviolent crimes for deportation, an opening salvo from a Republican majority that has vowed to deliver on President-elect Donald J. Trump’s promised crackdown at the border.

The measure, which drew the support of 48 Democrats as well as all Republicans, appears to be on a path to enactment, having garnered bipartisan backing in the Senate, which plans to take it up on Friday. It is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was killed last year in Georgia by a migrant who had crossed into the United States illegally and was arrested and charged with shoplifting, but was not detained.

But this is what the article says- "The bill would require federal authorities to detain undocumented immigrants charged with burglary, theft, larceny or shoplifting, broadening the list of charges that would subject them to being held and potentially deported. "

I have no problem deporting criminals... but in the US you aren't a criminal until you've been found guilty of a crime.

Even w shoplifting... might be by degree. Some small amount of food, a bit of absolute necessities; maybe should be a payback, or something.

then they are already guilty of an administrative violation of the INA. The contact with local law enforcement that then puts them on the map of the Federal authorities is the catalyst.

Fellow Democrats in Chicago have been complaining about illegal immigration for a while now.

If you are in the US illegally you are already subject to detention and deportation. Telling the federal authorities to detain and deport them is basically telling them to do their job. I agree people, even illegal aliens are protected by innocent until proven guilty but I really don't think it has any bearing here.

They just want to pass this so they can say they did something.
