Giuliani calls Georgia 2020 election workers' questions 'abusive' in contempt hearing

NEW YORK, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Rudy Giuliani on Friday said legal questions from two Georgia election workers that he falsely accused of trying to help steal the 2020 U.S. presidential election for Democrat Joe Biden were "abusive," as the former New York City mayor seeks to fend off a citation for contempt of court.

The election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea Moss, say Giuliani, 80, has not responded to all of the questions they have sent him in recent months to help them determine what property he must turn over as payment toward a $148 million defamation verdict in their favor.

At a hearing in Manhattan federal court on Friday over whether U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman should hold him in contempt of court, Giuliani said some of the questions - such as naming the lawyers and doctors he had consulted with in recent years - were intrusive and impossible to answer. "If there is such a thing as abusive and overbroad, this is the one you'd put in the law school textbook," said Giuliani, a former personal lawyer to Republican President-elect Donald Trump.

Freeman and Moss sued Giuliani - in 2021, accusing him of destroying their reputations. Giuliani made repeated false claims that a surveillance video showed the pair concealing and counting suitcases filled with illegal ballots at a basketball arena in Atlanta that was used to process votes during the 2020 election.

You called these election workers contemptible names and accused them of interfering with a Presidential Election, leading to threats on their lives and the need to leave their homes and hide?

They should sue you again like E. Jean Carroll did for TSF because you keep defaming them. But then again, you have no more money, right? Right? Right?

At least until the next time you publicly defame them.

This makes me smile

HAHAHA. Federal judge orders Rudy Giuliani to swear in a statement that records show there was no fraud in the 2020 election. If he doesn’t, he’ll be fined $200 a day.

I check to confirm this story

In addition to finding Giuliani in contempt, Howell ordered that within 10 days - Trump’s Inauguration Day – he must swear in a statement sent to the court that he’s reviewed and acknowledges several records showing that there was no fraud in the 2020 election. If he doesn’t do that, he’ll be fined $200 a day.

Judge Howell may send Rudy to jail if contempt continues

Rudy Giuliani has been found in contempt of court again, but this time, the judge is using a different tactic.

Thus far, Judge Beryl Howell has not held Giuliani accountable for contempt, but those days are ending. Giuliani appeared before the court on Friday, and the judge mandated that he sign a sworn declaration saying evidence at a 2023 defamation trial refuted his claims about Freeman and Moss. If he doesn't sign the paper, he'll be issued a $200 fee for each day he refuses or ultimately jailed.

It's the first time Giuliani has been threatened with jail time for contempt.

“So what you’re saying is that this defamation is never going to stop?” Howell asked. “He believed it in 2021 when he made the original statements. He believed it all throughout the trial. He believes it today. It’s never going to stop. That’s chilling.”

“Mr. Giuliani does have a history of not completing his financial obligations,” Howell said.

Legal analyst P. Andrew Torrez, who hosts "Law and Chaos," characterized it as Howell "reading him for filth for an hour," before requiring the change.

"Literally any other non-Trump human who displayed this level of open contempt for a court with no signs of remorse would be given a night in lockup to cool their heels with an instruction to come back on your knees with a fulsome apology if you want to be let out," Torrez lamented.
