Greenland's elected leader has said the island is not for sale after Donald Trump stated that controlling the territory was an "absolute necessity" for the United States.
"Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom," Prime Minister Múte Egede said in a written comment, according to Reuters.
It came a day after Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday: "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."
He made the statement when announcing PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as his pick for U.S. ambassador to Denmark. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

(10,902 posts)If my memory serves me, Puti is very interested in more tundra up there.
Maybe Puti whispered in Musk's ear, and Musk whispered into Trump's ear?
* on edit: As George Carlan would say "There's a reason for it, and we don't know it!"

Ha ha. I just Googled Greenland's population & it's less than 60K, perfect for taking over in the mind of a mad king.

(15,175 posts)Whoever possesses Greenland will be well situated to control shipping across the northern tier.
This same idea may be motivating his desire to make Canada a part of the US, as they will control many of the touchpoints for commerce through the newly opened channels of the Arctic.
For someone who denigrates the very idea of Climate Change, Trump certainly seems eager to position himself to profit from it.

(3,578 posts)...say $10 billion, for right of first refusal if they ever choose to put themselves up for sale, US has first dibs. Would be fun to see what Donnie would do with that and maybe Greenland could get a bidding war started with Putin offering free fossil fuels in perpetuity for the same right and who knows what China would bid. And they could charge a $1 billion entry fee to be even be considered for the bidding. (Wonder if anyone has told Donnie that Greenland is a self governing country but is technically in the Kingdom of Denmark which gives them over $500 million a year which is over 1/3 of their yearly operating budget? Naw. Why bother Mr. Bad Idea Wizard with facts?).

(3,568 posts)On the one hand, it's going to be difficult to paint Greenland/Denmark as a threat to the US. On the other, the maximum cynicism would be to say we need to seize control of Greenland for climate reasons. I can see the media going along with that.

(2,070 posts)The Truman administration proposed including rights to a patch of Alaskan oil in their offer to buy Greenland in 1946.
"The United States opened negotiations with Denmark about using Greenland, and at one point, the American side proposed buying the island outright for $100 million in gold and the rights to a patch of Alaskan oil."
We also put forth efforts in 1867 and 1910 to do so.
