WASHINGTON Congress struck an eleventh-hour deal to avert a government shutdown during the holidays, but in the process, it lengthened an already extensive to-do list for the first year of President-elect Donald Trumps return to office. The funding bill keeps the government open until March 14. Even though Republicans will control the White House, the House and the Senate, theyll again need Democratic votes to stop a shutdown in less than three months.
In addition, Trumps demand that Congress extend or abolish the debt ceiling to take it off his plate next year failed dramatically. On Wednesday, he threatened electoral primary challenges against any Republican who voted to fund the government without dealing with the debt limit. On Friday, 170 House Republicans defied him and did just that.
The turmoil of the week previews the legislative chaos that awaits Washington in the second Trump administration as the incoming president faces a wide range of major deadlines and ambitions.
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Republicans made a mistake by punting funding to March 14, and instead should have approved a stopgap bill through the end of next September to clear their plate for Trumps agenda. I think its kind of stupid, he said of the new deadline. Dont ask me to explain or defend this dysfunction.

(65 posts)It really says it all the Eloon got what he wanted (Provisions aimed at limiting American investments in certain Chinese industries were scrapped) but Stump didn't get his debt limit lifted. Now FAUX and breitbart are going to have to pretend that raising the debt ceiling doesn't really mean anything after decades of saying it would destroy our economy? So sad!

(91 posts)Ah, now I know what "a big mess" is in politics. It is something that the Democratic Party could solve fairly and quickly, if in power, and something the republicans are incapable of solving left to their own devices. After all, now they're completely responsible for ruining running the country.

(3,585 posts)Who knew? Guess I don't quite understand why you would want a debt ceiling removed if you are going to cut costs and balance the budget. Another mystery, unless of course you know you really are going to make the debt worse and not balance the budget.

(4,889 posts)The reason you didn't get a longer term or no debt limit was democratic legislators aren't going to give you guys a free pass.
You will now have to do the heavy lifting to add to the debt, raise the debt limit or get rid of it because we all know the GOP is the party of borrow and spend.
