Trump and allies are waging campaign against media to stifle dissent - experts

Donald Trump and his allies have started to wage a campaign against media organisations in the US that are critical of the president-elect by launching lawsuits that media experts warn are designed to stifle dissent and potentially put them out of business.
The tactic appears to be to aggressively pursue legal action against news organisations which Trump has long dubbed enemies of the people by asking for often hefty sums in damages. The cases are launched even if the odds of success sometimes appear long, because even an unsuccessful court action can be expensive for a cash-strapped media company and act as a deterrent.
The recent spate of lawsuits that he has filed, and his public threat to straighten out the press, do seem to signal an increased effort by Trump and his allies to go after the press through lawsuits, said Anna Diakun, staff attorney and managing attorney, fellowship program, for the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.
Last week alone saw several developments that deeply worry defenders of press freedom in the US. Trump sued Iowa pollster J Ann Selzer and the Des Moines Register newspaper for alleged brazen election interference in a civil suit that shocked free speech defenders. One advocate said the suit was potentially the most appalling example of Trumps efforts to weaponize courts against opponents.

(10,730 posts)Despite the ludicrous ABC settlement, the media is on pins and needles over what might happen when he gets sworn in. Trump is trying to prevent any kind of Woodward-Bernstein stories while he's in office. I only hope they tell him to go f*** himself.

Whats new is commercial media companies siding with big money to stifle first amendment rights that will eventually kill themselves.
Trump U. Graduates, no doubt.

(10,730 posts)Yeah, the media has economic issues. And Trump is trying to take advantage of that. But there's enough of a resistance out there that it can't and won't be entirely successful. There will be Freedom Fighters who will battle him. And we the people need to be behind them. Unless people want to see their rights completely taken away.

(25,705 posts)"Vexatious litigation is legal action which is brought solely to harass or subdue an adversary. It may take the form of a primary frivolous lawsuit or may be the repetitive, burdensome, and unwarranted filing of meritless motions in a matter which is otherwise a meritorious cause of action. Filing vexatious litigation is considered an abuse of the judicial process and may result in sanctions against the offender.
A single action, even a frivolous one, is usually not enough to raise a litigant to the level of being declared vexatious. Rather, a pattern of frivolous legal actions is typically required to rise to the level of vexatious.. " Wikipedia

Being magnanimous is seen as a fault here (unless it gains one something). Being compassionate and understanding is also something seen as 'weak'. Hate seems to be the one thing we can all agree on (either as a useful tool or a destructive force, we still agree that it is something to keep in our society).
Freaking sad, isn't it?

They are willing to let elementary school children fill up cemeteries all over the US to defend their interpretation of the 2nd Amendment and we are not willing to go to the mat to defend the first amendment? It is FIRST for a reason!
