New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the federal government will deploy a "state-of-the-art drone detection system" to the state amid increasing reports of the objects in the sky.
"This system will support state and federal law enforcement in their investigations," Hochul said.
The deployment comes days after Hochul said runways at Stewart Airfield in Upstate New York were forced to shut down for about an hour due to drone activity.
"This has gone too far," Hochul said.

NJ was apparently given a similar setup earlier.

I expect some are just regular planes moving along a flight path (and those who are not used to being out at night noticing the landing/taking off of planes, would probably freak).
I know I am under a flight path for 3 airports - PHL, PNE, KLOM, so I am used to all kinds of things flying overhead - the 9/11 almost week-long "ground stop" WAS the freakiest thing I had ever experienced regarding what was a complete lack of anything in the sky (outside of the designated CAPs that were flying back and forth along the east coast).
But there are some different types of quadcopters and bigger "drones" mixed in there in this case, particularly when you have reports of things "darting around".
IMHO, this might be like how you have some jackasses illegally aiming laser pointer lights at helicopters and planes to blind the pilots as a joke. I.e., misusing these things to get a laugh.

(145,075 posts)the "debris" could land on someone's house/property, on nearby vehicles, or on business property and cause damage and/or a fire. And in a freak situation, could land on top of someone walking nearby.
That was one of the issues that came up when the Chinese (surveillance) balloons were in the news where they waited until they were over water or empty land to take them out.

(145,075 posts)is what they don't care about (just maintaining gun manufacturer profits)... But the feds are more skittish about direct cause (see Waco/Ruby Ridge).
