Senior Democrat Gerry Connolly beats out AOC in key vote for top party post on Oversight panel
Source: NBC News
WASHINGTON A powerful panel of congressional Democrats on Monday recommended Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly over Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York for the top Democratic post on the House Oversight Committee, favoring a much more senior member of the partys caucus to take on the second Trump administration.
The closed-door meeting of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which is closely aligned with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., yielded 34 votes for Connolly and 27 for Ocasio-Cortez, according to a member of the panel. The position opened up after the top Democrat on Oversight, Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., challenged Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., for a similar post on the Judiciary Committee, prompting Nadler to bow out.
In an upset, the Steering panel on Monday recommended Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota to be the top Democrat of the Agriculture Committee. She secured 34 votes and beat out two much more senior rivals California Rep. Jim Costa, who got 22 votes, and Georgia Rep. David Scott, who received just five votes and has held the top Agriculture job since 2021 on the first ballot.
For the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, the Steering panel recommended senior Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., over more junior Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M. The vote was 44 to 17.

(9,887 posts)He is 74 yrs old. I worry this sends the wrong message that we continue to be the political party of old ideas and old ways and old people.
While I don't always agree with everything some of the younger members say and do we need new ideas and new approaches.
No 74 yrs old has the same fire and stamina of someone in their 30s.
We are only hurting ourselves to think we can keep doing things the same way and expect a different result.

(2,375 posts)It discourages younger voices from stepping up to run for anything & it turns off younger voters because it makes it seem like the party doesn't want to listen to them. There is too many cancerous people who dislike Aoc

(968 posts)Connolly is a longtime known quantity. If we elect nothing but thirty-somethings we'll miss out on benefits of age diversity.
I'm confident the party will find a similarly influential role for AOC.

The win was forecast a day earlier, when the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee voted to recommend the seat to Connolly, who has a decade more experience than Ocasio-Cortez on the powerful committee.
The non-binding Steering vote lent a symbolic boost to Connolly, 74, but his victory was ultimately decided by the full Caucus, which huddled behind closed doors Tuesday morning in the Capitol basement and voted by secret ballot to give him the coveted seat.
Connolly also got some help from former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who endorsed his bid and lobbied actively on his behalf in the lead up to this weeks votes.
