'He's A Juvenile': Canadian Lawmaker Slams Trump's 'Idiotic Behavior' After Tariff Threats

Source: Huff Post

A Canadian lawmaker who ripped Donald Trump in a speech on the floor of the Canadian House of Commons doubled down on his criticism Friday following the president-elect’s attacks and tariff threats toward the country.

Charlie Angus, a member of the Canadian Parliament, told Ben Meiselas of the MeidasTouch Network that his response was a “really simple” matter of “standing up and saying no.” “We’re going to have tough negotiations, fair play. But this kind of dismissive, idiotic behavior? I mean, he’s a juvenile,” Angus said.

His comments arrive after Trump, who has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all goods coming into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico, has blamed both countries for migrants and fentanyl “pouring” into the states.

The president-elect, who met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago estate last month, reportedly suggested that Canada could become the “51st state” at the meeting should his tariffs kill its economy in a remark that got nervous laughter out of Trudeau and others.

"Before the income tax was introduced in 1913, tariffs were the primary source of revenue for the United States federal government:"

Trump and his wealthy backers want to abolish the income tax and replace the lost revenue with tariffs.

That a clearly superior human such as Justin Trudeau would nervously laugh at dumps idiocy. I think he would be more likely to tell him to get bent.

You did not know there are so many Canadians in the US or you would not have said "the few".

I loved Canada when I moved to the US and lived there for many years. I still love Canada and I have returned. One person is at best anecdotal, but I think you need to come up to speed on just how intertwined the US and Canada are. Start with trade in goods and services, and then look at how gun crime in Canada is mostly fueled by smuggling of guns illegally obtained in the US due to US insanity over gun control.

that I mainly had in mind, given that those tend to be the types who get caught up in these "voter fraud" dragnets the GOP is obsessed with casting out.

I really should have qualified that statement with the "really only the 'illegal' migrants from Canada to the US you see much in recent years", to use fucking Republican language.

(Meaning international refugees wanting to claim asylum in the US instead of Canada. Legal immigration is quite a bit higher.)

US import trade deficit with Canada is only 9 % of US exports. It's 26 % with the world, 33% with Mexico and 129% with China.

Fentanyl? about 40 pounds to the US from Canada. Fentanyl from Mexico to US about 20,000 pounds. From China I don't know but probably off the charts.

The contrast is stark.
Canada is not the problem.
