Trump transition team recommends repealing requirement that companies report automated vehicle crash data
Elon Musk's Tesla opposes the requirement, arguing it has unfairly targeted his company
Unclear if Donald Trump administration will adopt the recommendation to quash reporting requirement

Dec 13 (Reuters) - The Trump transition team wants the incoming administration to drop a car-crash reporting requirement opposed by Elon Musk’s Tesla (TSLA.O), according to a document seen by Reuters, a move that could cripple the government’s ability to investigate and regulate the safety of vehicles with automated-driving systems.

Musk, the world's richest person, spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump get elected president in November. Removing the crash-disclosure provision would particularly benefit Tesla, which has reported most of the crashes – more than 1,500 – to federal safety regulators under the program. Tesla has been targeted in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigations, including three stemming from the data.................

......................

Reuters could not determine what role, if any, Musk may have played in crafting the transition-team recommendations or the likelihood that the administration would enact them. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group representing most major automakers except Tesla, has also criticized the requirement as burdensome.

A Reuters analysis of the NHTSA crash data shows Tesla accounted for 40 out of 45 fatal crashes reported to NHTSA through Oct. 15....................

MY god!! This data is reason enough to require the data collection!!

Not every Tesla driver is ignoring the traffic conditions, but I’ve seen quite a few who do, holding a newspaper or a cellphone in front of them and paying no attention to what us happening around them. I believe that self-driving cars are far too dangerous. I certainly don’t want to see self-driving trucks.

Tesla named 'The Deadliest Car Brand in America', NHTSA data shows.

That makes Musk the deadliest CEO of any business, or government department head.

iSeeCars has an interesting analysis of vehicle fatality rates (using the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System and then adjusted by miles traveled using iSeeCar’s own data) that reaches some fascinating (and, admittedly, grisly) conclusions. On one hand, the list confirms some basic vehicle safety concepts, like that the physics of a multi-vehicle crash favor the larger vehicles, and so forth. Small vehicles (physics), sports cars (risk-taking behavior) and some mainstream vehicles (perhaps just the sheer amount of them on the road?) tend to have the highest fatality rates. On the other hand, the brand with the highest number of fatal crashes per mile might surprise you.

It’s an American automaker, a relative newcomer, exclusively builds EVs and has arguably the most controversial (and richest) CEO in vehicular history. Yes, it’s Tesla. iSeeCars pegs the Tesla fatality rate at 5.6 accidents per billion vehicle miles traveled. This does not factor in any information about non-fatal crashes; it only includes FARS data in which at least one occupant died in the crash.
