Trump team eyes funding showdown with 'sanctuary cities' over immigration

Source: Washington Post

Updated November 26, 2024 at 6:05 p.m. EST|Published November 26, 2024 at 1:06 p.m. EST

President-elect Donald Trump’s advisers are discussing how to unilaterally strip federal resources from Chicago and other Democratic-run cities if they refuse to participate in deportations of undocumented immigrants next year, according to three people familiar with the conversations. Advisers to Trump have pushed for using federal pressure — such as withholding federal funds — against municipalities that don’t cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on deportations, the people said. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe efforts not yet made public.

Trump vowed mass deportations during his campaign — eliciting fierce pushback from some Democratic mayors in “sanctuary cities” and governors in blue states, some of whom are already promising to defy the president-elect’s pledges. He tried to slash funds to those jurisdictions in his first term, but with only limited success, and any similar effort in his second term could also run into roadblocks. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) told The Washington Post that “there will not be any cooperation” with ICE deportations and that the city will challenge any threats to its funding.

Trump allies have also discussed the idea publicly, including billionaire entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, the co-leader with fellow entrepreneur Elon Musk of Trump’s nongovernmental “Department of Government Efficiency” panel to suggest cuts to the federal budget. “Not an iota, not a cent of government spending should go to subsidize this,” Ramaswamy said on Nov. 10 on ABC’s “This Week,” referring to cities that don’t enforce immigration law. “Not to sanctuary cities, not to federal aid to people who are in this country illegally, and we’re going to see a large number, by the millions, of self-deportations as well.”

These dueling positions could set off a major clash between the new administration and elected leaders around the country — with no clear legal mechanism for resolution. Cities such as Chicago, Denver and San Francisco depend on federal funds for everything from transportation to housing — but they are also led by Trump critics who have promised to protect immigrants in their communities.

Dalton Ga carpet and flooring. Industry run on migrant labor. Then look at the chicken factories in Ga. Then the construction industry in Texas where the companies have already publicly sounded the alarm. From Florida to Arkansas to Idaho there are cities, towns, Congressional ,districts practicing defacto sanctuary. Call them out on their hypocrisy and bs just like the female president of Mexico has just done to Trump giving him a humiliating reality check on his tariff threat.

cities. Overwhelming the services until one side blinks. It’s nasty. But they’ve done this all along but at a smaller level. They will intensify the process. I think it’s going to get nasty by the trump administration.

Shining a light on the huge number of migrants he allows to work in Texas is essential to exposing his bs.

The fact is he knows which industry and businesses in Texas that are totally dependent on migrant labor .If Democrats push back and expose the hypocrisy we win. If we don't and keep playing defense we lose

Most so called Red states are highly dependent upon un documented migrant labor.
The attacks on Democratic sanctuary cities is more propaganda performance art.

As long as the M$M mutes our voices and obfuscates the lies and deceit of the GOP, then the hypocrisy continues.

"We" (editorial) spend money to HELP people (basic needs, charity, etc) and the GOP spends their money to HURT people and ENRICH themselves.

You have some who even balk at anyone taking a chunk of the "giving to help" money to use as a way to "counter with our own media".

And the few times we do have our own outlets, in comes the "but you do nothing but live in a bubble" crowd and those accusers proceed to dissuade people from supporting it, and the whole thing collapses.

It is all projection on their part.

The best way to protect the migrant labor force in the long term is to call the bluff of the Abbotts and the Huckabee's And the Marjorie Greenes. Demand their statistics on their migrant workforces. Take the fight into the aggressor's territory.

We cannot win by just framing the issue as human rights. It may make us feel virtuous but it will not win the war.

Not necessarily.

The Constitution prohibits the Federal government from compelling local officials to enforce Federal law – including immigration law.

And Trump tried to ‘defund’ cities in his first term and which was stopped by the courts.

True, Trump doesn’t care about the Constitution or the law, but we still have a semi-functional judiciary.
