Trump advisers contemplating cuts to Medicaid and other welfare programs
Further plans include blows to food stamps that could threaten millions of Americans to fund tax cut extensions
Donald Trumps economic advisers and congressional Republicans are discussing possible cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and other government welfare programmes to cover the costs of extending the president-elects multitrillion-dollar 2017 tax cut.
The cuts could mean new work requirements and spending caps, according to the Washington Post, citing sources involved in the talks, including aides in Trumps transition team.
Extending the tax cuts most of which are due to expire next year could add $4tn to the national debt, which already stands at $36tn.
But Republicans fear triggering a political backlash by slashing programmes that serve an estimated 70 million Americans to pay for a tax cut that disproportionately benefits the wealthy.

(19,320 posts)Nobody is able to work if they are on disability which is the point of the program. Dummies! If anything, they should say, you get this money to help you so you never work again. They never think.

(11,538 posts)They want to punish poor and disabled people for existing.
The only comfort I get from such a horror is that they will be hated by a very large group of people. Disabled folks have parents, siblings and friends. On average every person has about 10 to 15 close loved ones. They will all hate the MAGAts for this.
Are they cutting military disability too? Are they forcing the guy who got severe brain trauma in W's wars to go back to work too?
Had to add that those 65 and older are the people with the most disabilities. A big chunk of them voted for Trump. The screwing of his own voters now begins..... didn't take long.

(3,110 posts)We need to give them a huge backlash about this. Because if this goes down easy for them they will put Social Security and Medicare up for the chopping pronto! I hope there is a huge turn out for protecting the safety net of those of us who are in the hardest spot. If not we get what we deserve!

When they finally didnt get it passed through both chambers of Congress their billionaire financiers demanded their tax breaks anyway, which they immediately voted for and just tacked on to the debt.
Theyll do the same thing again.

(3,110 posts)We see how it turned out this time! Hard work between elections. Contacting officials local and national to stop this madness! City officials five miles from me just voted to make sleeping on public property illegal! This, an open attack on homeless people. Its so much easier to pass the problem off. Activism is the answer! We could start with getting big money out of elections and forming some type of guidelines or recourse to political ads that are blatant lies! But no, simply voting is no longer the answer!

(15,546 posts)for the most part, you can only receive food stamps if you are here legally. there are many families on food stamps (snap) where there is an undocumented individual in the household. It happens a lot with "anchor babies". Dad and mom sign up the family but only request food stamps for the children who are here legally but do not request assistance for themselves. Since dad and mom are not receiving assistance, they do not need to prove they are documented. Everyone knows the cases with children only are almost certainly families with an undocumented individual living in the house, usually as the head of household.
For years we fought with the federal government/Congress to keep these cases secret. In my state some red neck employees sent a list of all of those cases to the news media. Luckily the media did not publish the names or send them to the feds. The employee were fired.
With a Trumper as head of Agriculture, the feds are going to require the states turn over the names of those families where one or more family members are "not on the case"
That is how they will identify "illegals" and deport them. And the children? Since they have no tie to the country their parents are from, they might not be able to go with their parents when deported. they will go into foster care.
The other thing is the chilling effect. If Trump successfully gets the names, families with and undocumented member in the family will stop applying for food stamps. Kids go hungry. So sad and short sighted.

(376 posts)Perhaps someone should clue them in to the fact that if the administration makes cuts in medicare or social security that no Republican will ever be elected again in the United States.
Once again the expectation that there is going to be another election, needs to be tempered by realizing that there may not be another election!
Trump plans to remain in the White House as long as possible.

(10,910 posts)If they cut food stamps, people will actually starve to death because as helpless as they are, they would rather die than beg.
If they cut food stamps, soon we will be seeing pictures of emaciated children right here in the US. White children among them.
If they cut food stamps, the crime rate will soar because desperate hungry people will have no alternative in order to exist.
If they cut food stamps, their health will plummet.
And if they have no healthcare (Medicaid or Medicare), they will die.
If this all does come to pass, we'll see tent clinics and tent kitchens pop up all over this country.
All this and we haven't even heard what they're going to do to HUD. That's one they will probably eliminate altogether too, which will put them on the street or what? in garages?

No empathy. None. Zip. How many of us can say we have actually rubbed elbows with one of
these reptiles? The closest I can say I have come to are Republicans. They are in my family!
They call themselves Christians, yet vote with the Corporatocracy. They must be color blind,
because they don't appear to have noticed the red letters in the New Testament.
I am not a practicing Protestant, but all I learned from the religion when I was a kid stuck with me.
I am a Christian in my heart thru and thru. Not too crazy about "God" in the Old Testament, but
I do believe there was a good man that walked this earth whom we know as Jesus and he had some
pretty damn good ideas that mankind ought to listen to and abide by. And for goodness sake, I have
ALWAYS believed in the separation of Church and State!!!
The inability, for whatever reason, to feel empathy is one if not the biggest problem(s) in this
Capitalistic society. And don't anyone call me the C word because I do appreciate Capitalism.
It's just gone too damn far. Too many are in want in this so-called "Richest Nation on Earth".
I digress.

(16,348 posts)but there are plenty, even a majority, of white folks living in rust belt towns and rural areas who use them as well. I'd bet that group contains a lot of Trump/R voters. Then there are the families of people living in nursing homes where medicaid picks up the tab. What happens to their loved ones?
Trumpers don't think beyond their noses when they propose policies.

(3,110 posts)I had a wonderful friend, 101 years old, she was in assisted living. She called me on the phone distraught and verified that I would be there to see her that evening. When I walked in the room she handed me a letter. It was from Medicaid letting her know that she had been accepted into the program. She was mortified and certain it was a mistake. In her mind Medicaid was for the hopeless folks that had nothing. She did not want Medicaid and said her great nephew must have signed her up for this. I read the letter, turned the pages and told her this sounded like a good program and she should use it. Shes like..Really??Are you sure??? Well only if you say so!! My heart broke for her, a retired nurse for almost 40 years .she was bound to run out of money some day 99% of us are. We need to stand up for these programs. They are lifesavers for so many. Annie was an amazing soul born in 1909! A true inspiration!

(4,557 posts)* her humble SS and Federal Retirement benefits would never cover the actual cost. I wonder what will happen to her if Medicaid is cut or has "work requirements".
Will she be kicked out? Will she be moved to a cheaper facility? Perhaps they'll move her to a regular-care floor rather than a memory-care floor? Or they'll have to triple-up and put three to a room?
