Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to remain at post as some call for her to step down

Source: CNN

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has made clear she has no plans to step down, according to people close to her, despite calls from some on the left that President Joe Biden should try to name a successor before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

“She’s in great health, and the court needs her now more than ever,” said one person close to the justice.

Some progressives have suggested Sotomayor, the most senior liberal on the conservative Supreme Court, should step down so that Biden could try to name a replacement in the short window before Trump takes office in January. Talk has simmered for months over the possibility of Sotomayor retiring so that Biden could name a successor and ensure the seat remains a reliable vote for the liberal wing, but that has gone nowhere.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday that he doesn’t think Sotomayor should step down from the court.

Tell that to those who suggested that Justice Ginsburg should’ve stepped down as well. I think justice of Mayor should also step down while she can. Not an insult at all. It’s pragmatic.

For another thing. Justice Ginsburg had every right to stay..who among us knows when our time is up? Even a 50 year old justice could die at 51. We’ve got other battles Biden could win before the end of the year and that’s where the energies should be..not pressuring our justice to resign.

If Ginsberg had retired, she knew she had a very serious cancer, it would right now be 5-4, not 6-3. President Biden stepped aside for his country…this no different

For those that think she should stay, ya gonna be okay with a 7-2 split?….cause that’s what we’re talking about here

My position is from facts. ACB was nominated & confirmed BEFORE the election of 2020. Anyone who thinks that the GOP in the senate would allow for us to nominate and confirm a USSC pick in the next two months before Trump is inaugurated is out of their damn mind.

And two of those 53 weren’t excited about the possibility.

Now we’re talking about a clearly political move right after the electorate said they want the other guys making those decisions and we don’t know that we actually have 51 votes to do it.

Trying this is more likely to give Trump another judge than to lock down her seat.

Shame on these folks. First off, It’s discrimination.
Second off, It’s up to HER. She is performing her duties, so butt out.

They might sound like they're Democrats, but it behooves us to scrutinize them a lot more closely. This stinks of Putin. You don't really believe he told the troll farms they could all go home just because they got the second worst human being on the planet elected again, did you? Get real! Putin will never stop, even if he succeeds in beating any trace of decency into a puddle of blood and bone. His hatred of America, and everything it once aspired to be, is all-consuming. He is not only evil, he is insane, and should be defenestrated.

that if she retires that the Biden administration is going to be able to nominate and confirm a new justice?

The Republicans will put out every trick that they can to prevent that confirmation vote from coming before the Senate.

If you support her resignation, she does and the Republicans delay the confirmation vote? You own the fact that you helped the Republicans further cemented their hold on the Supreme Court.

Like when justice Scalia died early in 2016 and Pres. Obama was not allowed to appoint a replacement? The GOP will find every reason to block and filibuster a replacement.
