January 10, 2025
In the wake of Metas decision to remove its third-party fact-checking system and loosen content moderation policies, Google searches on how to delete Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have been on the rise.
...if you, like countless others, have had it with Metas algorithms whipping you into a frenzy over [insert cultural or political issue here] and are tired of the company slurping up your data to train its AI or target advertising, then read on.

If youre really set on deleting (and not just deactivating) your Facebook account, you should download your personal information from the Facebook archives, which includes photos, active sessions, chat history, IP addresses, facial recognition data, and ads you clicked on.
Note that these instructions require a computer and a web browser, not a mobile phone.
Heres what to do:
Click the down arrow under your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
Scroll down on the left-hand column till you get to Your information, and click Download your information.
You will be prompted to visit the Accounts Center. Click Continue.
When the pop-up appears, click Download or transfer information.
You can choose information from which accounts, including your Facebook, Instagram, and Meta Horizon accounts, to download. Click Next.
Choose how much information you want to download, and click Next. Note from FB: If you select Specific types of information, you will be able to choose which kinds of information you want to download, including data logs.
Decide if you want to download your info to a device or directly transfer your info to a destination and click Next.
If you select Transfer to destination, you can choose the destination and schedule future transfers. Once you make your selection, click Start transfer and enter your Facebook profile password.
If you select Download to device, choose your file options. There will be a list that lets you create a date range, and you can download in HTML or JSON, and choose between high, medium, or low media quality.
Click Submit request.
It's an option to consider, if for no other reason than to own some of your digital communications history.

(39,019 posts)Wouldn't be surprised if, by 2026, magas have the old platforms mostly to themselves, entwined with ads from right wing corps.
(I'm using exterior hard drives as my 'destination' for my FB downloads; I've run out of enough GB space on my laptop.)
I completely 'Blocked' three Beijing-based businesses from existing on my FB newsfeed yesterday.

(14,372 posts)Even more than during the election. These are lazy memes where they poorly slap some text onto a blank billboard or a pickup truck tailgate, not even trying to fix the perspective. They either just suck at photoshopping or have a really bad AI bot.
I have probably blocked close to a hundred, but the troll bots just keep trying. I am convinced that the algorithms now consider blocking as "engagement", and the more I block, the more it sends similar trash to my feed.
Working on getting as many FB friends as I can onto Bluesky before giving Meta the finger.

(39,019 posts)My vote is the FB's AI using bot algorithms to get training through feedback from FB users.
As for AI itself, AI's going to be in the unseen background of a lot of change that we on DU will be trying to lay at the feet of the Felon or oligarchs, but AI will be in their background, too.
I say this because I'm in the middle of a book you and others here might find helpful. I'm halfway through it and it's already changing the way I'm seeing our nation's and world's future (at four years past publishing it's not at all outdated, and its easy to read analysis is way more relevant than humans realize. Also, I highly recommend it because it's written by an AI insider from Google) It's worth every penny to learn about our human place in the present and future. It could go a long way to informing our activism around here.
