3. I chose to retire with my wife here
Fri Nov 8, 2024, 04:38 AM

for a number of reasons, including this was my Filipina wife's dream. But being a permanent resident of a foreign country in a culture that really fits my philosophy is a residual advantage.

I'm not gloating, mind you. The Philippines is always just an election away from a totalitarian President. Duterte was no picnic. But the people here are just so friendly and kind that it is pleasure to be here.

By the way, no foreigners talk Philippine politics here. We can't vote and even if you agree with them, they are insulted of any criticism of their government by a "Kano", so I limit all my political opinions to America and to this site.

7. funny you mention Germany

one of my favorite restaurants in Iloilo Philippines is owned by a German national. It's an Italian restaurant called Giuseppe's, with a cook from New York. The tomato sauce is like home (I'm actually from Boston) and the pizza is great. I eat there at least once or twice a month.

But I said to the owner, some day you have to explain how a German opens an Italian Restaurant in the Philippines.

The world is full of stories.

6. Thinking about it, now

I'm retired, and my Filipino wife is nearing retirement. I hadn't thought seriously about moving there until now. I probably won't, though -- don't want to miss my kids and their families -- unless Trump cuts SS so much that we're forced too.

8. My wife and I are childless

I'm 72 and she's 69. We've been married over 20 years. Her family has 25 acres in Pototan and we built our house here. I spent about $300,000 USD but it's more like and estate than a house. The same place would be worth over a million and a half in America.

9. I realize that is a natural reaction and I am glad for you... But I hope our expats won't unleash this reaction too much

Some will have the resources $$$ and situational opportunity to join you somewhere outside the US, but most of us do not have the option for multiple reasons. We are going to have to cope and probably suffer. Some may suffer in ways we had never predicted.

So, I appreciate how you are feeling. And, I don't blame you for both feeling that relief and expressing it. But please (I say this to all expats) be sensitive to those of us who are stuck and will have to take up the fight in one way or another--including those not physically able to literally "fight." We, at least need your virtual support.
