Recount leads to tie in Perry County Commission District 1 race

PERRY COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - One of Alabama’s closest local elections has taken another dramatic turn.

A recount ordered by the Alabama Democratic Party has changed the outcome of the Perry County Commission District 1 Democratic primary from a one-vote victory for Donald Bennett to a 398-398 tie with longtime Commissioner Albert Turner Jr.

The recount was conducted Thursday after the Alabama State Democratic Executive Committee ruled that while Turner’s formal election contest was filed after the state’s deadline, his request for a recount was submitted on time.

According to the committee’s ruling, Turner’s recount request was properly delivered because it was submitted to Perry County Probate Judge Carlton Hogue, who also serves as chairman of the Perry County Democratic Executive Committee.
