Why is it I can't watch these UFC fights, unless I pay?

They're being held on federal government property, subsidized with my tax dollars, and I can't even watch it on TV.

I already pay a coupla hundred dollars every month for services to make it possible to watch cable TV (internet service provider, plus a google "youtube.tv" subscription that includes Paramount, but not Paramount+). Apparently, you need Paramount+, which is the channel on which these fights are now broadcast (it used to be ESPN+)...and now they want another $11 per month for Paramount+, the new home for UFC fights. It Irks me.

Yeah, I know it's brutal and disgusting and is frequently referred to as human cockfights or dogfights. Boxing is not all that different and I don't see many objecting to that, or any other combat sports, and there's a gazillion of them, including collegiate wrestling, which starts in high school, including public high schools. Once you decide one combat sport is legitimate and okay...well, you're on a slippery slope.

It just really irks me that this is a "pay to view" event, when we, the taxpayers, are already paying for it, but we can't watch it.

even give it any space in my day. I’m so surprised people here would post about it.

I’m going to do my best to let this news cycle end before I even go back to the news. The White House as circus grounds is too sad.

3. I'll step right up to say I can see quite a bit of difference to be found in 'contact' sports.

(in both intent - and actual activity and conduct)
And 'human cockfighting' is quite apt as a descriptor for the pugilistic strains.
I'll have no trouble maintaining that there's a fair degree of difference separating "people might get hurt" - and "we are trying to inflict pain and injury".

My opinion - and you are completely free to harbor your own.

They promote tribalism and violence between communities.
Make them club sports that participants come from larger areas and more communities. Hate between towns because of sports leads to violence and even deaths. School pride should be tide to scholarship, not sport teams.
Club sports might be a better model than the tax payers funded system we have now.
