Been a long time since I've seen one of the fights (before the UFC went all right wing). Before we even had the name MMA, we were still working out names (NHB, Cross Training, ...)

I have trained with some professional MMA people. The one thing I saw was that everyone who did it loved doing it. A lot of boxers are there as a job. It's the only way out of poverty for some. The MMA people just loved what they did.

I was younger then and enjoyed being hit as well as hitting in a controlled environment. It's like chopping onions after a hard day. Just let it all go and be in the moment.

but, I also don't get boxing.

I can't imagine having fun watching two humans beating the snot out of each other, with a crowd watching, hoping to see someone seriously injured or dead.

I imagine that man wishing he could thumbs up or down like a Roman emperor, deciding who lives and dies.

They used to fight bare-knuckled but they tried to make boxing more civilized and required gloves.

... is to protect the fighters hands, not the other fighter. With bare knuckles the puncher cannot be as aggressive, and blows to the head are less frequent. With gloves blows to the head can be more frequent and more powerful. So the gloves make the fight more damaging.

I always liked boxing. I thought it was probably the most reasonable way for some men to settle their differences. The gloves seemed to takes some of the blood and violence out of the sport.

However, I see these kicks to the head and attacks while the opponent is on the canvas as much more violent.
