I went through my country western phase in the 90s and had forgotten she did this song

If I have to hear Greenwood's 'Gawd bless the USA' one more time, I may come unglued.

(33,377 posts)to Sean Hannitys radio show during the GW Bush years? (It got changed to This Is How We Roll by Florida-Georgia Line shortly after that song charted.)
Rush Limbaugh also started his show with My City Was Gone by The Pretenders. But did he know what Chrissie Hynde was singing about in a government that had no pride?

(137,800 posts)Heard his radio show a couple of times when a co-worker who liked RWNJ radio had his show on. My reaction was, doesn't he know WTF this song is about?

(7,974 posts)A lot of country women resonate with this song. Violence against women is still tolerated, maybe more so in rural communities.

(11,969 posts)Damn that's moving.
I don't listen to Country music, and way back when I would have Hannity's show on, I heard that opening. The part he used is musically great and those lines don't give away what the song really is about. He probably still doesn't know.
One day, the place I was working in had a country station on, and this song started. I thought "damn, I have to listen to Hannity's shit again", then realized it was just the actual song. When it finished, I kinda laughed because it was so obvious no one involved in producing his shit show ever listened to the whole thing, or they assumed (corrrectly) that his feeble-minded audience would never know the difference.

(53,657 posts)I've got tears in my eyes right now. I normally don't care for most music videos, but this one is really powerful. Most people don't really listen to the lyrics, myself included, but these are heart wrenching.
Well, she seemed all right by dawn's early light
Though she looked a little worried and weak
She tried to pretend he wasn't drinkin' again
But daddy left the proof on her cheek
And I was only eight years old that summer
And I always seemed to be in the way
So I took myself down to the fair in town
On Independence Day
Well, word gets around in a small, small town
They said he was a dangerous man
But mama was proud and she stood her ground
She knew she was on the losin' end
Some folks whispered, some folks talked
But everybody looked the other way
And when time ran out there was no one about
On Independence Day
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It's Independence Day
Well, she lit up the sky that fourth of July
By the time that the firemen come
They just put out the flames
And took down some names
And send me to the county home
Now I ain't sayin' it's right or it's wrong
But maybe it's the only way
Talk about your revolution
It's Independence Day
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It's Independence Day
Roll the stone away
It's Independence Day

(7,974 posts)Its amazing how our country artists can really hit emotions out of the park. And when they are self-righteous in a good way(!) they are at their best.

(51 posts)And a terrific video! It's kind of an anthem for women. I'm putting that on my playlist and will find and listen to some of her other stuff. Until this "trashing the White House" gig, I had never heard of her. If she still sounds like that -- wow, she's good. And I never listen to country music.

(33,377 posts)Confession: During the summer break between junior high and high school (a few months after GW Bush was re inaugurated) I snuck listens to Hannity on the local right wing station when I got bored with the rap station. Thats how I was introduced to that McBride song. Never knew the real meaning of that song til years later.
Luckily I never became a fan of his.
