When a congressman unveiled the Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act in 2025, it was largely dismissed as a sad joke. A year later, its suddenly less funny.
When a Republican congressman last year unveiled the Donald J. Trump 0 Bill Act, it was largely dismissed as a sad joke.

Fifteen months later, as the administration embraces the idea, the joke is suddenly a lot less funny.

Over the course of Donald Trumps second term, many of the presidents most sycophantic congressional allies have unveiled proposals intended to glorify him in outlandish ways. Some, for example, have tried to make Trumps birthday a federal holiday, while others want to carve Trumps face into Mount Rushmore. Some have unveiled legislation to rename Dulles International Airport after Trump, and others have backed a bill to name Washingtons subway system after the president and his MAGA slogan.
But several GOP lawmakers have taken a particular interest in American currency. In fact, roughly a month after Inauguration Day, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina unveiled the Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act, which according to the congressmans press release, would direct the Bureau of Printing and Engraving to design and print a $250 dollar bill of legal U.S. tender that bears the image of the Republican president......
The underlying idea, however, was not ignored by officials on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. The Washington Post reported:
Trump administration officials have pressed the office responsible for printing the nations money to design a $250 bill featuring the presidents portrait, according to four current and former employees, in what would be the first appearance of a living person on U.S. currency in more than 150 years.
Starting last year, two political appointees at the Treasury Department U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior adviser, Mike Brown repeatedly urged staff at the agencys Bureau of Engraving and Printing to prepare prototypes of the note, according to the employees, who said the move raised concerns because federal law currently allows only deceased people to appear on bills.
When the director of the printing bureau told the political appointees this wasnt a realistic plan, she was abruptly reassigned.....
I wont pretend to know whats likely to happen with this plainly ridiculous effort, but this seems like a good time to update the broader list documenting the scope of the increasingly weird Trump glorification campaign.
U.S. currency: In case the $250 bill gambit werent quite jarring enough, Trump recently announced plans to add his signature to U.S. dollars a first for a sitting American president which is not to be confused with plans for a massive, 3-inch commemorative gold coin featuring Trumps face.
Renaming buildings: The presidents allies have already added Trumps name to the Kennedy Center and the Institute of Peace. By some accounts, the president expects the proposed White House ballroom to bear his name too.
U.S. military: Plans to construct Trump-class battleships are underway, and the nations next-generation fighter jet is set to have an F-47 designation in honor of him. (Trump is the nations 47th president.)
Passports: A few weeks ago, the State Department announced specially designed U.S. passports that would include Trumps image, as well as the presidents signature in gold.....
Banners: Giant fascistic banners featuring Trumps face are currently covering the front of several government buildings, including the headquarters of the Labor, Agriculture and Justice departments. They were followed by the administration unveiling different banners around the nations capital that show the president in a hard hat alongside text that reads, Thank you, President Trump....
Domestic ambitions: Trump wants a new football stadium in Washington to be named after him, as well as New York Citys Penn Station.
International ambitions: Trump recently indicated that he wants and expects a statue to honor him in Venezuela. He also said in January that it was not too late to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico (which he attempted to rename once already) to the Gulf of Trump, and he recently suggested the Strait of Hormuz should also be called the Strait of Trump.

(182,882 posts)The presidents obsession with self-glorification is old hat, but his tactics regarding the Gateway infrastructure project are new.
Trumpâs Gateway tunnel pitch sounds an awful lot like extortion: If Democrats want to save the project, restore the funds, and prevent the job losses, theyâll have to indulge his self-glorification obsession.

Articles of impeachment have been introduced over less.

The good news is that the president recently signaled a willingness to release the resources that would allow work to continue. The bad news is the specific condition he has in mind. Punchbowl News reported:
President Donald Trump offered to release the funding for the massive Gateway infrastructure project if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agrees to support renaming both Washington-Dulles International Airport and New Yorks Penn Station after Trump.
The Trump administration directly made the request of Schumer, according to four sources familiar with the situation.
.....For those keeping score, Trump and his allies have now applied the presidents name to the Kennedy Center and to the Institute of Peace, announced the construction of Trump-class battleships, unveiled a commemorative legal-tender coin that will feature his face on both sides and have launched Trump Gold Cards, Trump Accounts and TrumpRx (the governments new drug-pricing website). By some accounts, the president wants the forthcoming White House ballroom to be named after him, too.....
The presidents pitch is, for all intents and purposes, an attempt at extortion: If Democrats want to save the infrastructure project and prevent the job losses, they must indulge the presidents obsession with self-aggrandizement and self-glorification.
Articles of impeachment have been introduced over less.
This is ridiculous, Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said in a statement. These naming rights arent tradable as part of any negotiations, and neither is the dignity of New Yorkers. At a time when New Yorkers are already being crushed by high costs under the Trump tariffs, the president continues to put his own narcissism over the good-paying union jobs this project provides and the extraordinary economic impact the Gateway tunnel will bring.
She added, I demand that the president put people first and unfreeze this project and all the others his administration has been holding hostage for his personal gain.
