https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c99l270vy3noFormer US First Lady Jill Biden says she thought her husband, President Joe Biden, was having a stroke during his infamously faltering presidential debate in 2024.
"I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never," Jill Biden told CBS News, the BBC's US partner.
"I don't know what happened," she said. "As I watched it, I thought, 'Oh, my God, he's having a stroke.' And it scared me to death."
President Biden faced intense pressure from fellow Democrats to step down as their candidate after a poor debate performance against then-Republican candidate Donald Trump. Biden ultimately dropped out of the race and endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
The former first lady's interview with CBS News Sunday Morning's Rita Braver will air on Sunday.

(6,627 posts)I have formulated another potential theory, subsequently. What about the device that disrupts brain functions? It could be responsible for incidents like the Havana syndrome. It is a secret weapon which became public in the past year.
It would explain the bizarre incident. Here is an article about the device.

(6,627 posts)I was very cautious to ask a question and posit a possibility, as opposed to making an absolute statement.
You made an absolute statement. What if you're wrong?
I absolutely do not think Joe Biden merely "fucked up". It was a transitory episode. It could have been a medical episode, or it could have been something else. I still don't know.
mr715
(4,418 posts)to explain his debate performance.
That is absurd. Truly. Like, I'm sorry, but if you are entertaining that as a "plausible scenario" I suggest you reevaluate.
And it wasn't a transitory episode. Biden negotiated 1 debate, very early in the season. He was being framed as old of it and frail. Because he looked old and frail. And he was not nearly as press-forward as he had been early in his career.
He had one job - not to fuck up the debate, and he did. No speculation there.
Incidentally, he also had STAGE FOUR cancer which had spread to his bones after the election was over.
Let's not add Havana syndrome to the mix. He is old. He isn't the debater he was in 2020 and certainly not the one he was in 2008.

(22,175 posts)The two scheduled debates (which only one Biden participanted in) were the earliest in modern history. Why schedule a debate in June? Because they knew. Had the first debate have been September or October and he preformed like this, it would have been way too late to try and get him to do it.
In retrospect, it still was.

(4,418 posts)He gave a "fiery" response about his mental acumen and confused his sons Beau and Hunter.
It wasn't a one shot thing. He was having trouble for a long time.
The entire reason why the debate was so disastrous was because it affirmed the framing that existed. He had been being handled by consultants and advisors and the only thing that got him out of that bubble was Nancy Pelosi "doing things the easy way or the hard way."

I remember hearing the news talkers saying how he was furiously doing debate prep for his one big debate. I distinctly remember Fox and right wing folks saying they anticipated he would use adderall or cocaine to seem more energetic and were actively lowering expectations for Trump.
