Arlington County (Va.) police officer dies of cancer related to 9/11 response
The Arlington County police officer who first called in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon died Friday of cancer, Arlington County police said in a news release.
In June 2025, Cpl. Barry Foust was diagnosed with cancer related to 9/11 recovery efforts, the Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) said. The department credits Foust with beginning the county's response to the attack on the Pentagon.
"On the morning of September 11, 2001, Corporal Foust was on patrol at the intersection of Walter Reed Drive and Columbia Pike when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon," ACPD said in the release. "He immediately reported incident information over the radio, beginning Arlington Countys response to the terrorist attack at the Pentagon. He remained working at the site for the following week collecting evidence and the remains of victims."
Foust is the eighth Arlington County police officer to die a line-of-duty death, ACPD said. He is the second ACPD officer to die of 9/11-related cancer.
