But, would Canada and Mexico even WANT those areas in the center of the continent?

The South will be a semi-lawless protectorate of China, same as Siberia in Asia. If anyone wants to survive comfortably in this region they'd best know "important" people and speak Russian and/or Standard Chinese. Most able bodied former U.S.A. citizens of the region will be working as wage slaves, ten or 12 hour shifts six days a week, for the extractive or consumer product assembly industries.

California's independence will come at some political cost. Most of the shipping companies moving product between the South and China will be based in Los Angeles and San Francisco where nary a harsh word will ever be said about China, even behind closed doors.
