(2,231 posts)I think my granddad was the only one in our family who was in the military. Served in France in WW I and never talked about it. He sent my gran (then his fiancée, I think) a pewter box filled with French hankies and a book of love poems (very Victorian), which are my only keepsakes of him--and the war. Had to have been quite an experience for a farm boy from Iowa.
