I have wryly thought over the years that I see people here talk about DU being helpful for sanity and that is really true for many of us.
No systems of trust these days when even the NIH has been contaminated for so long by sellouts who sold put to Google and Facebook and now it is Musk and Palantir which is where appeasement and selling out lead.

And I like that you are all thorny and prickly though nice. I don’t trust overly agreeable people. I mean one tries (sometimes without much success) to maintain a civil facade.

I don’t know if you have read Stepford Wive BumRushDaShow - really good book - and Bobbie says at one point that she liked going outside Stepford and seeing real women all irritable and so on.

But now I have realized there are many corollaries to that. If the “blind orchestra” Trumpian diversity smoothly orchestrates your voice through some foul portal so you go and yell at some unfortunate human orphans (ai is not human) thinking they are a creepy, splashy school of spoilt, wealthy brats of the soulless technocrats of Google etc, that is not irritable the useful human way. That is just being a jerk.

Based on pretty much all my views I am woke and feminist, but I am careful in using the term “woke” thanks to the hatchet job by the right.

Somehow wokeness, feminism etc need to be communicated better. It is a communication problem not a policy issue and heavy handed robotic systems and social media built by these creeps exacerbate it. Entertainment giants will always dilute down the important parts of any message. I notice it all the time.

Well at least I can whine to DU. The last 6 years would have been way more hellish without DU, Current Affairs, Yasha Levine, Chris Ketcham, Ed Zitron etc. Most of the mainstream press os kinda depressing.

My mom didn't just "read" books. She came armed with a sharpened #2 pencil, acres ballpoint pen, and ax6" ruler to UNDERLINE sections of pages that she would then have her daughters read to get the "main idea" of some subject that she wanted to pass along to us. She did the same with newspapers (whenever I traveled somewhere I would bring back a week's worth of that city's newspapers).

She (and many of the women of her generation who grew up during the depression and WW2 which was generally "pre-TV" ) became "radical" in young adulthood. We had a subscription to "Ms." magazine in the house starting from when it was first published and my mom even went to a talk given by Gloria Steinem back in the '70s here in Philly.

I have my own bookcases full of mostly (ancient) history, some economics, Star Trek books, lots of pop fiction, and hobby books. Got rid of most of my old college chem books when I ran out of room. For awhile, I had read almost every Lawrence Sanders book from his "Deadly Sins" series (starting with The Anderson Tapes" ), a bunch of Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Issac Asimov, etc.

Many of my recent ones are ebooks (am currently tackling "1929", the writing style of which is gloriously engaging considering the subject).

Of course with DU and dozens of news sites, I am now literally "reading" all day long and can't remember the last time I turned on the TV.
