Trump has appointed a successor, former Fed governor and investment banker Kevin Warsh, who would ordinarily have his confirmation hearing next week. Warsh would then become Fed chair, succeeding Powell, who would likely leave the Fed entirely. So the quickest way for Trump to oust Powell would be just to let Warshs confirmation proceed and avoid screwing it up.
But Trump being Trump, his vanity, rage, and muddled thinking are causing Powell to stay in office. On Wednesday, in an interview on Fox News, Trump blurted out that if Powell doesnt leave, Ill have to fire him, adding, Ive wanted to fire him, but I hate to be controversial. Thats good to know.
The problem, of course, is that Trump cant fire Powell. In his daze, he somehow forgot that.
The Supreme Court has not quite ruled definitively on that question in so many words, but in earlier cases on a presidents right to fire other term appointees the Court has indicated that the Federal Reserve is a special category. The Court also blocked Trumps efforts to fire another Fed governor, Lisa Cook, on fake charges.
And on Tuesday, Trumps toady prosecutor Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, made another foray to go after Powell on discredited charges that he was negligent in allowing cost overruns in the refurbishing of Fed headquarters. She sent two deputies and an investigator to the Fed construction site. They approached construction workers, but were turned away. Robert K. Hur, a former federal prosecutor hired as outside counsel by the Fed, pointed out that prosecutors were violating federal Judge James Boasbergs earlier ruling that Pirros investigation lacked sufficient evidence to proceed.

Arrest him if he fights back.
Who will stop Trump?
No one.

(25,539 posts)The philosophy of "be like water" is lost on him.
A lot of the bad will he is cultivating could be easily tamped down or swept under the rug if he (and his minions) would just shut the fuck up.
Take the Rene Good murder, for example. They could have suspended the murderer with pay, announced an "investigation", and sit it out while our ADHD press moves on to the next story of the day. Instead, they make up preposterous stories attacking the victim as a terrorist, destroyed and hid evidence, announced that the murder would not even be investigated, and that anyone who thought the murder was unjustified can go bugger themselves. They took the already shocking story and made it more shocking, and in addition gave it media legs to run on.
We see this again and again, with the doubling-down, the never admit an error, the automatic attack mode, the obvious lies repeated over and over.
Life is a give-and-take. Most folks understand that. "You can't always get what you want." If you run into a wall, you can either bang your head against it or find another path.
To Trump, life is a take-and-take, with no concessions, no remorse or sympathy, no consequences, no regard for moral values.
People, well, most people, wake up and smell the bullshit. When they are pissed on every day, they eventually figure out it is not raining. They get exhausted with the never-ending drama.
And Trump is the all-time champion drama diva. Norma Desmond constantly posing for a grotesque close-up.
It is all because he is a malignant narcissist desperate to hide his inadequacies.
