Bible quotes to drive your MAGA relatives crazy

On the subject of war, Matthew 5: 9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.”

On the subject of capital punishment, Matthew 5:21: “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.” (Liberals have to quote the classic King James translation on this one because all the modern translations use the more precise translation “murder” rather than “kill.”)

On the subjects of homosexuality and transgenderism, Matthew 7:1: “Judge not, that you be not judged.”

On the subject of illegal immigration, Matthew 7:12: “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

On the subject of showing compassion to one and all, Matthew 22:37-40: Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God will all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

On the subject of programs for the poor, Matthew 24:34-36: “Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.”

On the subject of excess wealth, Mark 10:25: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

On the subject of health care, Luke 14:13-14: “But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

On the subject of the separation of church and state, Luke 20:25: And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

On the subject of mercy shown to anyone caught in sin, John 8 : So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her (the woman caught in the act of adultery) first.”

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."—Matthew 6: 5-6

the words of Jesus. I found an old Red Letter Bible at a yard sale. Told the seller I’d been looking for one of these for years, in that case he said I could have it for free. It’s old and beat up like it had been thru a war or two. All the words attributed to Jesus are in red.
Hard to find anyone more Secular than me, but I try to study religions. Took a class in college, Anthropology Of Religion and loved the class.

The study of people.

Even though we're such a tiny bit of life and a tinier bit of physics, etc. They're all good subjects.

Leviticus 19:33-34 (NIV 1984) “ ‘When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

According to New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman, the ancient Greek word for "camel" is very similar to the ancient Greek word for "rope". It would make a lot more sense to try to put a rope through the eye of a need than a camel. He considers it a mistranslation.

24 But let justice roll on like a river,

Micah 6:8

8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

Matthew Chapters 5-7
"The Sermon on the Mount"

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:

2 In the last days

the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established
as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and all nations will stream to it.

3 Many peoples will come and say,

“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 He will judge between the nations
and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.

5 Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us walk in the light of the Lord.

Most Christians never actually crack the book, except to find whatever passage their pastor is spewing about on a given Sunday morning. Then he, it's usually a he, tells them what it means, aligning it with their tribal views, and they're happy.

No deep thought required. No questioning. No "Wait a minute. Didn't it say something totally different a few books back?" Or "Talking snakes? That's just silly." "How the hell did Noah get penguins?" " A mosasaurus wouldn't be perturbed in the least by a global flood. Where'd they all go?" And the pièce de résistance "You told me not to do something, knew I was going to do it anyway (omniscient), made no attempt to stop me or explain why I shouldn't, and now your damning me for eternity? Sounds like a rather pernicious set up to me. Some all loving father. And why come looking for us afterward (omniscient and omnipresent)? You are god, right? You knew where we were."

Actually reading the Bible, combined with thinking, is the catalyst that's started more agnostics and atheists on the road to disbelief than anything else. Me included. To your point, Jesus, or a conglomeration of apocalyptic, itinerant preachers, came up with some pretty cool stuff. Nothing terribly original. Mainly a collection of good and wise ideas from their own culture and those surrounding them. Taken together, they're a good way to live. And a handy club for the maga Christians mentioned above.

Only women were capable of adultery and it was considered a violation of property rights.

Add to that, when they quote various sex laws, they are cherry picking. Because if you get all of them and try to put it all together, none of it works. That's because they changed over time and often borrowed the laws of neighboring lands of the day.

This is due to things in the OT being "re-written" over time. For example, David and Goliath. Supposedly Goliath had bronze armor, only problem is, it wasn't invented yet and the amount listed is physically impossible to carry. But the story was re-written during the time of the Greek occupation who had bronze armor and weapons. So they co-opted a story of a great warrior king in order to inspire the masses to revolt. That's what makes the OT so dis-jointed and why the Torah holds more precedence over everything else.
