It is an E-4B. It is not one of the planes ordinarily used as AF1.

Earlier today, one of the VC-25s was flying around the.mid-Atlantic.

(69,979 posts)If you're near Andrews and you look up and see a 747 flying around, don't take it too seriously. A VC-25 is a 747 customized to serve as Air Force 1. An E-4B is a military version if a 747 fitted out to do something else.
Last I saw of the E-4B it was out toward Ohio.
Sometimes a plane is just a plane.
And good afternoon.

(497 posts)"The E-4B "Nightwatch" is a militarized Boeing 747-200 acting as the US National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC), serving as a survivable command post for the President, Secretary of Defense, and Joint Chiefs of Staff. Known as a "doomsday plane," it is designed to manage forces during national emergencies, featuring nuclear shielding and advanced communications."
