Iranian commentator: "Even several nuclear bombs" would not force a surrender

NYT: Iranians Voice Shock and Defiance in Face of Trump’s Latest Deadline

With President Trump’s deadline to unleash mass destruction on Iran just hours away on Tuesday, Iranians faced the threats with a mix of indifference, defiance, and bewilderment.

…“The first thing that came to my mind is that I think Trump is under a lot of pressure, and that he has lost his mind,” said Lili, who works in the arts scene in the Iranian capital, Tehran. She asked not to use her full name out of fear of repercussions for speaking to foreign media…Lili said she and her family had made no contingency plans at all, and they were not planning to flee Tehran. They were not stocking up on goods or bracing to hole up at home. “We need to continue with our lives,” she said, adding there was no apparent haven to flee to: Attacking infrastructure meant almost anywhere could become a target.

…Mohsen Borhani, a law professor at Tehran University, said that as he read through Mr. Trump’s threats toward those the American president had called the “crazy bastards” running Iran, his first thought was of the founding fathers. In particular, he thought of the writings of Thomas Jefferson, “and the values that America was supposed to lead by,” he said. “I also thought about the global order established after World War II, centered around the United Nations and shaped under Roosevelt’s leadership,” he said, referring to former President Franklin D. Roosevelt. “And I wondered, how it is possible for a U.S. president to undermine and discredit all American values and 250 years of human legacy?”

Mr. Borhani, a well-known political commentator in Iran, said the Trump administration was still operating under a “false assumption” that enough military pressure could force Iran’s authoritarian clerical rulers to surrender. “Based on my understanding of Iranian society and governance," he said, “I can state clearly that even several nuclear bombs would not achieve such an outcome.”

… Lili, the Tehran resident, said that as someone who long opposed her government and sympathized with the nationwide demonstrations that sought to topple it just months ago, Mr. Trump’s threats have shifted her feelings toward the United States and Israel. Both countries’ leaders have repeatedly voiced support for Iran’s opposition and encouraged Iranians to use the war to rise against their leaders. But their warplanes are now bombing not just military sites, she said, but critical industrial facilities, universities, and schools. “So now, we are supporting Iran and whatever government is running it,” she said.

3. The way to topple Iran's regime should have begun 47 years ago.

Embed the CIA and use mind control instead of getting Ollie North to send them arms.

We really haven't done much about Iran. Just treated them like another Arab state, which they aren't. Eisenhower and Nixon gave the shah unlimited power and an unlimited budget. Nothing much was done to prevent Khomeini from taking over, thinking that he was better than the shah. Iran actually had some good moderate revolutionary leaders at the time (not Islamic), yet Khomeini plowed in and killed them. They had a provisional parliament. Only Bonisadr survived because he fled the country.

The western media was enthralled over Khomeini, but he should have stayed in France. Yet, the western world fell in love with him and considered him "another Ghandi".

Should have done what we did with the Soviet Union. Embed, embed, embed....

The US has underestimated Iran from the get-go...

We fucked with the Soviet Union.

Iran is a dangerous super-power that the US fails to acknowledge.

Super powers can project military power anywhere on the globe, Iran can not.

As of 2026, Iran’s economy is estimated to rank around 44th globally by nominal GDP, so not economic super power either.

10. I think they're more powerful than the US acknowledges.

They always have been. US was too focused on the Soviet Union, while their ancient "buffer neighbor" to the south was quietly gaining power.

The US gave the shah everything Why? Because of stupid...Just because they were a US ally doesn't mean we don't allow checks and balances.

Sanctions are what keep them from economic power. In some respects, they're like Imperial Japan. Now I don't how Japan ranked among world powers prior to WWII, but they sure became a power house.

And certainly bot a superpower. They have no capability to stop the attacks on themselves or to put real pressure on their attackers elsewhere.

What they have is exactly what I said on the first day of the war. They can put pressure on oil prices and make the war politically unsustainable to fight. You can't stop that with an air campaign, you have to invade by land and take and hold territory. Trump being so far unwilling to do that means Iran can continue to block traffic in the straight and continue to launch drones and missiles at regional targets.

Our mistake with cold war interventions in Iran, is that we thought of Iran as this "backward place"

Never engage with an opponent who is willing and able to absorb as much (or more) pain as you are able to inflict. Time is always on their side.
