CDC pauses testing for rabies and other serious infectious diseases
Disease tracking is also temporarily halted for mpox and other common viruses, such as Epstein-Barr and varicella zoster.
The federal governments disease-tracking agency has paused its diagnostic testing for rabies, mpox and a number of other infectious diseases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week posted a list of more than two dozen types of testing that have become unavailable.

The pausing of lab testing comes in the wake of the dramatic downsizing of the CDC in the last year through layoffs, retirements, resignations and the nonrenewal of temporary appointments. Staffing fell by 20% to 25%, according to different estimates, and was felt across the agency including in the laboratories.

(23,106 posts)1. This is pretty scary stuff.
So now we have no experts in rabies - a disease which has not been eradicated. So there is no expertise available for vets or doctors to rely on, if I understand correctly. Human health is a low, low priority.

once symptoms appear.

(23,106 posts)4. Dogs are still required to get rabies vaccinations...
but that's because they are at risk of contact with a carrier animal. Dogs who are prone to hunting wild animals are most at risk...but its still a low risk.
If a dog has had contact with an infected wild animal they can transmit it to a human. This is an urgent medical situation.
